Thoracic Surgery Department I
The First Department of Thoracic Oncology Surgery is a clinical department primarily dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of esophageal cancer, lung cancer, and mediastinal tumors. The First Department of Thoracic Surgery is at the forefront of esophageal cancer treatment: 1)It is the principal pioneering institution for postoperative esophageal reconstruction using a “narrow gastric tube” after esophageal cancer surgery; reconstruction with a “narrow gastric tube” is widely recognized as an important advance in esophageal surgical techniques. 2)It provides individualized comprehensive treatment for cervical esophageal cancer (different strategies, including surgery/radiotherapy and laryngeal preservation/laryngectomy, are selected according to the tumor’s varying response to systemic treatment). 3)It performs combined-organ resection when esophageal cancer invades surrounding organs (e.g., one-stage resection and reconstruction of the esophagus and aorta). 4)It performs salvage resection after radical chemoradiotherapy for esophageal cancer. The First Department of Thoracic Surgery is also at the forefront of lung cancer treatment: 1)It focuses on surgical resection after multidisciplinary induction treatment for locally advanced lung cancer. 2)It participates in multiple international multicenter clinical trials that have changed the NCCN guidelines (CheckMate 816, KEYNOTE 671, NeoADAURA), and the study results have been published repeatedly in leading journals such as N Engl J Med. 3)It actively promotes complex lung cancer surgery and robotic lung cancer surgery. The department is currently the affiliated institution of the chairperson of the Esophageal Cancer Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association and of the chairperson of the Professional Committee of Integrated Rehabilitation for Lung Tumors of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association.
