Laboratory Animal Facility
The Laboratory Animal Facility of Peking University Cancer Hospital and Beijing Institute for Cancer Prevention and Control was established in 1976 and obtained the License for the Use of Mice and Rats in a Barrier Environment [SYXK (京) 2021-0031], issued by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Science and Technology. It has a total floor area of approximately 400 m² and is equipped with a mouse individually ventilated cage (IVC) system (1500 cage positions) and some isolators, with a daily housing capacity of approximately 8500 animals. The platform currently has 10 staff members: 1 director (oncology, PhD); 6 senior technicians/technicians, 4 of whom hold master's degrees (animal science, veterinary medicine, medical experimentation); and 3 staff members responsible for autoclave sterilization and cage washing. All staff hold the required certifications to work. Technical services provided by the platform include the construction of tumor cell and tissue xenograft (CDX and PDX) models, applied research on transgenic mouse models, antitumor drug efficacy and toxicology experiments, humanized immune reconstitution, and more; Spectrum-CT and Lumina II in vivo imaging systems are used to track the proliferation and metastasis of tumor cells in mice and to study the pharmacokinetics and targets of action of antitumor drugs. The platform participated in the revision of the national standard «Quality Control of Reproductive and Developmental Health of Laboratory Animals» and the Beijing municipal standards «Technical Specifications for Ethical Review of Laboratory Animal Welfare» and «Management and Technical Specifications for Animal Experiments»; it undertakes national continuing education programs and demonstrations of animal experiments for graduate students. Over the past five years, research groups of the hospital and institute, with members serving as first or corresponding authors, have published an average of more than 40 SCI articles related to animal experiments per year, including in journals such as Nature and Cell. Platform honors include the Peking University Health Science Center Teaching Support Award and the Annual Scientific Research Invention Patent Award; the Peking University School of Clinical Oncology Outstanding Teaching Collective, Outstanding Teaching Supervisor, Advanced Individual in Teaching Management, and Special Award for Scientific and Technological Innovation, among others.
