Bone and Soft Tissue Oncology Department

The Department of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors of Peking University Cancer Hospital was established in June 2007 by Professor Fang Zhiwei, a renowned Chinese expert in bone and soft tissue tumors, and, after nearly 18 years of development, has become a nationally renowned sarcoma diagnosis and treatment center. In the early stages of its development, the department started by treating its first patient, gradually began regularly organizing sarcoma seminars for the western Beijing region, took the lead in establishing the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Special Committee of the Beijing Anti-Cancer Association, successfully held the China-Japan Sarcoma Cooperation Forum and a national sarcoma diagnosis and treatment training course, jointly held an osteosarcoma forum with the US MD Anderson Cancer Center, one of the world's leading cancer centers, and regularly held the National Forum on New Advances in Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors of Peking University Cancer Hospital, with its influence in the field continuing to expand. The department's core diagnostic and treatment focus is on mesenchymal tumors of the skeletal and musculoskeletal systems, specifically covering benign and malignant bone tumors of the extremities, pelvis, and spine, benign and malignant soft tissue tumors, as well as various metastatic tumors and malignant skin tumors requiring orthopedic surgical intervention. In terms of technical expertise, with comprehensive treatment as its core, it is at a nationally leading or advanced level in standardized comprehensive treatment of soft tissue sarcoma, standardized neoadjuvant chemotherapy and limb-salvage treatment for osteosarcoma, precise resection and prosthetic reconstruction of bone tumors and bone metastases in the extremities / spine / pelvis, repair and reconstruction of soft tissue defects and neurovascular injuries, and surgical treatment of melanoma. At the same time, as an active domestic clinical center for the development of new sarcoma drugs, the department has completed and is advancing multiple domestic and international registration clinical trials of innovative drugs, involving chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and intratumoral injection, among other directions, in recent years, multiple achievements have been presented orally or as posters at top international oncology congresses such as ASCO and ESMO, demonstrating outstanding translational research capabilities. In terms of its medical team, the department currently has 27 beds, 4 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, and 3 attending physicians, most physicians hold doctoral degrees, and the key clinical staff have studied or undertaken visiting appointments at renowned medical institutions in the United States, Europe, and Japan, the current director is Fan Zhengfu and the deputy director is Liu Jiayong, and the team has strong clinical and research capabilities. Academically, the department has continuously served as the chair institution of the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Special Committee of the Beijing Anti-Cancer Association, it is an initiating institution of the Orthopedics Branch of the National Health Industry Enterprise Management Association and the institution serving as its standing deputy chair and secretary-general, as well as the institution leading its Bone Tumor Group, it also serves as the institution holding vice-chair / standing committee member positions in relevant special committees of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, the Chinese Association of Medical Education, the Chinese Association of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, the Beijing Medical Doctor Association, and others, as well as the national deputy leader institution for study groups on soft tissue sarcoma, bone metastases, drugs, and precision treatment, playing an important role in setting industry standards and providing academic leadership.
