Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Early Cervical and Vaginal Diseases
Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Early Cervical and Vaginal Diseases
The Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Early Cervical and Vaginal Diseases at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University was established in 1975. It is one of the earliest cervical disease diagnosis and treatment centers established in China and has developed into the largest center in China for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the female lower genital tract. The department has 1 inpatient ward and 2 day wards. Its outpatient services include the cervical disease clinic, cervical surgery clinic, colposcopy clinic, vulvar clinic, perianal clinic, STD clinic, etc. It currently provides diagnosis and treatment for all types of diseases of the vulva, vagina, cervix, and uterine cavity. Its distinguishing features are a range of high-technology diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, including colposcopy, high-resolution anoscopy, high-frequency electrosurgery, laser, cryotherapy, focused ultrasound, cold-knife conization, and photodynamic therapy. It holds a first-rate position nationally and a leading position internationally in cervical cancer screening, laser treatment of intraepithelial neoplasia of the female lower genital tract, treatment of cervical precancerous lesions, vulvar white lesions, and the diagnosis and treatment of anal intraepithelial lesions.
The center currently has 23 full-time medical professionals at senior and intermediate levels, most of whom are experienced gynecologists with many years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical diseases. They include 8 chief physicians, 8 associate chief physicians, and 7 attending physicians; 17 hold doctoral degrees and 6 hold master’s degrees. There are also 16 full-time nurses. Professor Sui Long, head of the department, is China’s first IFCPC (International Federation for Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy) council member representing the Asia-Pacific region, a member of the ISSVD (International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease), and vice chair of the Chinese Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (CSCCP). In 2021, the department recorded more than 200,000 outpatient visits, over 47,000 colposcopy examinations, 9,000 cervical physical therapy procedures, and 5,000 cervical conization surgeries.
As one of the first group of national gynecologic endoscopy and colposcopy technology training bases awarded by the Ministry of Health, the center has consistently organized various nationwide training courses on standardized diagnosis and treatment techniques for cervical cancer and its precancerous lesions every year. In terms of the duration of its operation, scale, and quality control, it has remained at the forefront nationally. In recent years, it has trained more than 700 visiting and research trainees annually, with participants coming from all over the country. The department has also long continued to organize various nationwide short-term academic advanced-study courses to popularize and promote new knowledge and technologies in obstetrics and gynecology, including obstetric and gynecologic laser, colposcopy, and high-resolution anoscopy. The Course on Diagnosis and Treatment of Cervical Lesions and Colposcopy Techniques has been held 23 times to date. In recent years, every session has been filled to capacity; participant numbers were repeatedly controlled at 330 per session. The center is a teaching base for obstetrics and gynecology at Fudan University and undertakes undergraduate large-lecture teaching, English-language instruction for international students, PBL bedside teaching, and other teaching activities every year.
Using the Cervical Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center as its platform and focusing on cervical diseases, the department has conducted extensive clinical research. The experts of the older generation carried out in-depth studies of cervical diseases and achieved fruitful results. In 1977, Professor Ding Aihua’s ‘Application of Laser Technology in Medicine’ won the Shanghai Municipal Major Scientific and Technological Achievement Award; in 1978, Professor Zhang Xiyin’s ‘Research on the Prevention and Treatment of Cervical Cancer’ won the National Science Conference Award; in 1988, Professor Zhang Xiyin’s ‘Research on the Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Cervical Cancer’ won the Second Prize of the Ministry of Health Science and Technology Progress Award; and in 2021, Professor Sui Long’s ‘Construction and Application of an Integrated Diagnosis and Treatment System for Lesions of the Female Lower Genital Tract and Perianal Region’ won the National Maternal and Child Health Science and Technology Award. In recent years, the department’s research development has entered the fast lane. The department has been responsible for and undertaken more than ten projects, including projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Science and Technology Support Program, medical guidance projects of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, subprojects of major projects of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, research fund projects of the Ministry of Health, and research fund projects of the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau. Five members have served as principal investigators for National Natural Science Foundation projects, and the department has published more than 100 research papers. Its main research directions include the pathogenesis of HPV infection and related diseases and research on diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. It has received multiple awards from the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, the Ministry of Health, and other organizations. It has served as chief editor of ‘Cervical Cancer Screening and Clinical Management’, ‘Practical Colposcopy Techniques’, ‘New Advances in Gynecologic Infections’, ‘Treatment of Benign Uterine Hemorrhagic Diseases’, ‘Abnormal Leukorrhea’, and ‘100 Questions and Answers on Preventing Cervical Cancer—Vaccination, Screening and Treatment’; chief translator of ‘Atlas of Colposcopy: Principles and Practice’; and co-translator of ‘Modern Colposcopy’ and ‘Diagnosis and Treatment of Cervical and Lower Genital Tract Precancerous Lesions’.
