Reproductive Medicine Centre
Reproductive Medicine Center
The Reproductive Medicine Center of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University was founded under the leadership of Huang Hefeng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It encompasses professional fields including assisted reproduction, reproductive genetics, gynecological endocrinology, sperm banking, and andrology. It provides infertile couples with comprehensive fertility guidance and assisted reproductive technologies, and provides families with familial genetic diseases or that have given birth to children with birth defects with genetic counseling services for healthy offspring.
The center’s team has extremely extensive clinical and research experience in assisted reproductive technologies, including artificial insemination (husband’s sperm/donor sperm), in vitro fertilization–embryo transfer (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and preimplantation genetic diagnosis/screening (PGT), among others. The team has always focused on the safety of assisted reproductive technologies, particularly the health of offspring, and has conducted follow-up and cohort studies for many years. At the same time, it makes full use of its strengths in reproductive genetics and has distinctive expertise in preventing birth defects. Using PGT, it has successfully blocked, for patients, the familial transmission of genes associated with nearly 200 rare diseases and immunodeficiency diseases, including Schaaf-Yang syndrome, as well as genes associated with hereditary familial tumors.
Relying on the medical resources and medical environment of the clinical department of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University, together with the advanced testing methods available in its supporting departments, the Reproductive Medicine Center has smoothly carried out its various activities. The close, mutually complementary cooperation between the center and the clinical department has played a positive role in improving the diagnosis and treatment of infertility at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University and in advancing prenatal diagnosis, perinatal care, and other work.
The department also has an excellent research and teaching team, including chief physicians, associate chief physicians, attending physicians, and professional laboratory personnel. It undertakes a number of projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program, the National 863 Program, the Science and Technology Support Program of the 12th Five-Year Plan, major international cooperation projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Basic Science Center projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and General Program projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It compiled China’s first Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines—Assisted Reproductive Technology and Sperm Bank Volume, led the preparation of China’s expert consensus on preimplantation genetic diagnosis/screening technology, and served as chief editor of several monographs, including Modern Assisted Reproductive Technology, Practical Human Assisted Reproductive Technology, and Clinical Practice of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, as well as the national-level planned textbooks Reproductive Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology (English Adapted Edition, Second Edition). As the first completers, the department’s team members won 2 Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and 4 First Prizes of the Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.
