Clinical Laboratory
The Clinical Laboratory of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University comprises the Yangpu New Hospital and the Huangpu Old Hospital. Its specialties are organized into six professional groups: clinical laboratory testing, clinical biochemistry, clinical microbiology, clinical immunology, endocrinology, and molecular biology. The laboratory occupies approximately 1,700 square meters. It is equipped with Hitachi 7180 and 7600 fully automated biochemical analyzers, a Johnson & Johnson 350 dry chemistry analyzer, Beckman DXI800/ROCHE e601/Abbott I2000 chemiluminescence analyzers, SysmexXT-4000/SysmexXN-1000 five-part hematology analyzers, a BACT/ALERT 3D blood culture instrument, a VITEK-2 fully automated microbial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility analyzer, a Roche Cobas-411 urine analyzer, and other equipment, enabling it to provide timely and accurate reports for clinical care.
The department has 51 professional and technical staff members, including 1 doctoral degree holder, 8 master’s degree holders, 29 bachelor’s degree holders, and 14 junior-college graduates. It is a high-quality service team with a sound organizational structure and an increasingly rational talent structure.
The Clinical Laboratory launched the ISO 15189 laboratory accreditation system in September 2009 and passed its first CNAS assessment in April 2010; a total of 63 testing items were submitted. The department emphasizes talent development and disciplinary advancement. Over the past five years, it has published more than 50 academic papers, including approximately 10 SCI papers, and undertaken a number of projects, including National Natural Science Foundation projects and Shanghai Municipal Health Commission projects.
Director Ying Chunmei of the Clinical Laboratory is a doctoral supervisor. She previously undertook further training at the Clinical Microbiology Department of Prince of Wales Hospital of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States. She currently serves as deputy chair of the Laboratory Medicine Branch of the Shanghai Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine; deputy chair of the Maternal and Child Laboratory Medicine Professional Committee of the Shanghai Association of Eugenics and Better Birth (Shanghai Maternal and Child Health Association); a committee member of the Laboratory Medicine Society of the Shanghai Medical Association; deputy head of the Women’s and Children’s Group of the Shanghai Laboratory Medicine Association; a committee member of the Laboratory Medicine Branch of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association; a committee member of the Expert Committee of the Shanghai Regional Bacterial Resistance Surveillance Network; and an expert in the review of access to molecular diagnostic technologies and genetic amplification technologies in Shanghai.
Deputy Director Gao Jing of the Clinical Laboratory received funding as a Shanghai Excellent Young Medical and Technical Talent in 2016.
Department Highlights
In recent years, in response to clinical needs, the Clinical Laboratory has successively introduced testing for new items such as group B Streptococcus, NIPT (non-invasive DNA), NIPT-plus, the MTHFR gene, vaginal microbiota, and respiratory pathogens. As one of the Shanghai Prenatal Diagnosis Centers, it undertakes regional quadruple screening for Down syndrome.
Teaching
Director Ying Chunmei of the Clinical Laboratory teaches the advanced course of the Laboratory Medicine Department at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The Clinical Laboratory provides internship training for students of the Laboratory Medicine departments at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and Shanghai Health Medical College; it has trained 8 master’s students and currently has 2 doctoral students enrolled.
In 2016 and 2019, the Clinical Laboratory held national continuing education courses, respectively entitled Fungal Laboratory Testing and Clinical Practice and Prenatal Laboratory Testing and Clinical Practice.
Research
Director Ying Chunmei obtained two National Natural Science Foundation general projects in 2013 and 2018, respectively. She also obtained projects from the Shanghai Natural Science Foundation, the industry–academia–research–medical cooperation program in biomedicine under the Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Action Plan, the innovation research project of the Shanghai Pudong New Area Science and Technology Development Fund, and the Shanghai Pudong New Area Health Bureau, among others.
