Anaesthesiology
Department of Anesthesiology
The predecessor of Fudan University Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, “Ximen Hospital for Women and Children,” was a Christian missionary hospital founded in June 1884 by the American Margaret Wiillianson (Margaret Wiillianson), and was the first hospital for women and infants in Shanghai. In 1985, it was renamed the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated with Shanghai Medical University. In 1992, it was among the first hospitals designated a “Baby-Friendly Hospital” by the former Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations Children’s Fund; in the same year, it was designated Shanghai Red Cross Hospital by the Shanghai Red Cross Society. In 1995, it passed the evaluation for a National Grade III Class A Specialized Hospital and became a network hospital of the International Emergency Rescue Center of the former Ministry of Health. When the hospital was founded, its roof was red, and for more than a century, local residents have affectionately called it “Red House Hospital.” Following the merger of the former Fudan University and the former Shanghai Medical University in 2000, it adopted its present name. In 2003, the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau approved “Shanghai Red House Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital” as its second official name.
Fudan University Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital currently has two campuses, Huangpu and Yangpu; the Yangpu Campus opened at the end of October 2009. Accordingly, the Department of Anesthesiology provides anesthesia for inpatient and outpatient surgeries in gynecology, obstetrics, and breast surgery at both campuses, as well as labor analgesia and monitoring and treatment of critically ill patients, among other services. The department has developed distinctive expertise in anesthesia for laparoscopic surgery, anesthesia for hysteroscopic surgery, anesthesia for high-risk obstetrics, and combined spinal-epidural block. The department currently has 42 physicians, including 1 chief physician, 8 associate chief physicians, 18 attending physicians, 2 doctors with doctoral degrees, and 25 doctors with master’s degrees. In 2016, the anesthesia workload reached 45,000 cases, with labor analgesia accounting for approximately 70% of vaginal deliveries. Techniques such as autologous blood reinfusion and ultrasound-guided nerve blocks are routinely performed in clinical practice. The department is also responsible for the hospital ICU and has accumulated extensive experience in managing critically ill patients with various types of shock, DIC, acute pulmonary edema, respiratory failure, and other conditions. The department is equipped with various advanced multifunctional cardiovascular and respiratory monitors. Invasive monitoring has become routine for critically ill patients and patients undergoing radical pelvic surgery. Advanced equipment, including fiberoptic bronchoscopes, multiple video laryngoscopes, depth-of-anesthesia monitors, neuromuscular block monitors, and blood gas analyzers, provides more comprehensive and advanced technical support for patients’ perioperative safety.
The department is an authorized master’s degree training site in anesthesiology at Fudan University and undertakes the teaching and training of graduate students. It is also a teaching base for the standardized residency training base in anesthesiology at Huashan Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University and a teaching base for the anesthesiology specialist training base at Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University, undertaking rotations in obstetric and gynecologic anesthesia for residents in standardized training and physicians in specialist training.
In June 2013, after being accredited by the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Anesthesiologist Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, it became one of 15 national obstetric anesthesia training bases and undertook the training of obstetric anesthesiologists from primary hospitals throughout the country. Each year, it holds 1 national continuing education course on advances in obstetric and gynecologic anesthesia and 2 national training sessions for obstetric anesthesia bases, receiving widespread recognition. The Department of Anesthesiology focuses on tracking domestic and international developments and the latest advances in the discipline, actively identifying and addressing problems in clinical practice, and conducting clinical research. The projects it has secured include 1 Shanghai Natural Science Foundation project, 3 Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau Foundation projects, 1 Fudan University Shanghai Medical College project, 2 Shanghai Anesthesiology Society Young Investigator Foundation projects, and 1 Shanghai Pain Society Young Investigator Foundation project. Its main research directions include obstetric anesthesia and labor analgesia, anesthesia for gynecologic laparoscopic surgery, perioperative pain management, and anesthetic pharmacology. In recent years, it has published more than 80 papers in domestic core and higher-level journals and 20 SCI papers, including articles published in leading journals in anesthesiology such as Anaesthesia, Anesth Analg, and Eur J Anaesthesiol.
