Gynaecologic Oncology
Gynecologic Oncology Department
Basic Overview—
The Gynecologic Oncology Department of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University/Shanghai Red House Hospital was established on the basis of the hospital’s long-standing gynecology department, focusing on standardized integrated outpatient and inpatient diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic tumors and related research. It has 181 beds and 16 medical teams, including 16 chief physicians and 11 associate chief physicians; 10 are doctoral supervisors and 8 are master’s supervisors. More than 8,000 operations are performed annually, with level-IV operations accounting for 50%. More than 30 doctors are qualified to perform level-IV laparoscopic gynecologic oncology surgery, ranking first in Shanghai. Over the past 5 years, our hospital has treated an annual average of more than 3,000 cervical cancer cases, more than 1,000 endometrial cancer cases, nearly 400 ovarian cancer cases, and more than 100 gestational trophoblastic tumor cases. The numbers of cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, and gestational trophoblastic tumor patients treated rank first among hospitals in Shanghai and among the leading numbers nationwide.
Department Features—
The department specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of specific gynecologic tumors. Dedicated teams have been established for ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, cervical cancer, and gestational trophoblastic tumors, providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for all types of gynecologic tumors. Fertility-preserving treatment is provided for young patients with gynecologic tumors, including fertility-preserving surgery and drug therapy for early endometrial cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian tumors, gestational trophoblastic tumors, and other gynecologic tumors; minimally invasive surgery is provided for patients with early gynecologic tumors, including robotic surgery, 3D laparoscopic surgery, and single-port laparoscopic surgery. The department comprehensively performs radical surgery for cervical cancer, staging surgery for endometrial cancer, radical surgery for vulvar and vaginal cancer, and staging or cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer. Multidisciplinary combined surgery is provided for patients with advanced or recurrent tumors, including pelvic exenteration and secondary/multiple cytoreductive surgery. The department also makes full use of chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and other methods to provide standardized and effective adjuvant treatment for postoperative and recurrent patients, particularly for high-risk gestational trophoblastic tumors and the screening and treatment of sensitive drugs for recurrent ovarian cancer. Related genetic counseling for gynecologic tumors, including ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer, is also provided. In 2019, Professor Hua Keqin of the Gynecologic Oncology Department led the preparation of the first Guidelines for Quality Control Standards for Gynecologic Single-Disease Conditions in the Yangtze River Delta Region, which included the three major gynecologic malignancies (cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, and endometrial cancer). The department also participated in drafting the national quality-control standards for cervical cancer. The Red House tumor quality-control standards extend throughout the Yangtze River Delta and even nationwide. As one of the hospital’s key subspecialties, the department has established models of a normalized, standardized, and sustainable gynecologic tumor prevention and treatment system for different tumor types, forming a solid research foundation covering the entire cycle of gynecologic tumor screening, diagnosis and treatment, prevention, follow-up, and information-platform development.
