Our hospital's Family Planning Department has long enjoyed a high clinical and research standing in Shanghai and throughout China. It has an outpatient clinic, operating rooms, and an inpatient ward; undertakes all family-planning examinations, treatments, and contraceptive counseling; and is a department that closely integrates clinical care, research, and teaching into a unified medical, research, and educational entity. It has 1 chief physician, 2 associate chief physicians, and more than 10 attending and resident physicians, with a well-structured professional talent pipeline. It specializes in various family-planning techniques, such as induced abortion, medical abortion, insertion and removal of intrauterine devices, menstruation induction for pregnancy termination, sterilization, various forms of labor induction, and tubal anastomosis. It is one of the earliest hospitals in China to carry out subdermal contraceptive implantation and medical abortion. It also accepts the diagnosis and treatment of difficult family-planning clinical cases referred from all parts of the country. Relying on new medical concepts and technologies, it has developed comprehensive diagnosis and treatment programs for high-risk cases requiring pregnancy termination for family-planning purposes and for the corresponding complications. The ward has 29 beds and has extensive clinical experience in terminating difficult or high-risk pregnancies and managing complications of contraceptive and family-planning procedures, especially scarred-uterus pregnancy, incision-site pregnancy, postoperative retained tissue, and other conditions; it has distinctive treatment methods for these conditions. In recent years, difficult and complicated family-planning cases managed each year have accounted for approximately 80％ of family-planning inpatients. The family-planning outpatient clinic has a nursing station, a follow-up room, and an outpatient medical-abortion observation room, and undertakes all family-planning examinations. There is also a family-planning guidance room, specifically for guidance on various contraceptive methods and contraceptive counseling after induced abortion. Our hospital's Family Planning Department is one of the earliest clinical drug-trial units in Shanghai. It has undertaken more than 10 national and internationally collaborative clinical-trial projects involving family-planning drugs. It actively adopts advanced technologies in the field of family planning and has extensive clinical experience in the use of various contraceptive measures and their indications. The annual outpatient volume reaches more than 70,000–80,000 patient visits. The family-planning outpatient operating room performs painless induced-abortion procedures and has a total of 5 operating rooms, a postoperative rest room, and a surgical waiting area. The family-planning outpatient operating room has a relatively stable team of doctors and nurses with extensive experience in family-planning surgery. At present, several professional and technical personnel have been awarded the titles of "10,000 Family-Planning Operations Without Accidents" and "1,000 Family-Planning Operations Without Accidents." It performs various outpatient procedures, such as: induced abortion in early pregnancy, insertion and removal of intrauterine devices, subdermal implantation, medical abortion, painless induced abortion, and tubal patency testing. More than 20,000 family-planning procedures of various types are performed each year. In 2009, the expansion of our hospital's Yangpu Branch was completed and it was officially put into use. The Yangpu campus has a comfortable environment and complete equipment. The Family Planning Department is fully established there and likewise has a family-planning ward, outpatient clinic, and outpatient operating room. The environment and facilities of the branch enable us to provide better services to more women.

After decades of effort by several generations, the department's medical care, teaching, and research have developed as an integrated whole. It also has a strong research and teaching team, including 2 supervisors of master's students. Each year, 2–3 graduate students complete their studies. It undertakes clinical teaching and internship training for students of the Fudan University School of Medicine. It has completed numerous projects, including WHO projects and projects at the national and municipal levels.
