Otolaryngology

The otolaryngology department of the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Nanjing University Medical School was established in September 2001. It reports over 20 beds and 20 medical and nursing staff, including two associate chief, one attending and one resident physician, with two master's graduates. Annual activity includes over 8,000 outpatient visits, nearly 500 admissions and over 600 operations. The department teaches dentistry and otolaryngology at Nanjing University and reports research publications and awards. Its equipment includes surgical microscopes, powered ENT and endoscopic nasal instruments, laryngoscopy, radiofrequency and electrocautery devices and a 60-channel sleep-monitoring system. Nasal endoscopic surgery treats chronic sinusitis, polyps, epistaxis, hypertrophic rhinitis, septal deviation, sinus cysts, congenital choanal atresia, foreign bodies, adenoid enlargement and benign or malignant nasal and sinus tumors. Special interests include nasal deformity repair in cleft lip and palate and odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. Laryngeal endoscopy treats vocal nodules, polyps, papillomas, cysts, leukoplakia and early vocal-cord cancer. The team also treats laryngeal and head-and-neck tumors, performs tonsil and adenoid removal and parapharyngeal or tongue-base tumor resection, and evaluates obstructive sleep apnea with sleep monitoring and treats it with modified UPPP surgery. Low-temperature plasma radiofrequency ablation is another listed technique. Ear surgery includes tympanoplasty, modified radical mastoidectomy, auricular reconstruction and removal of benign or malignant ear tumors.
