1. Basic information: The Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine was officially established in January 2006. In July 2020, it was designated the “Lung Nodule Diagnosis and Treatment Sub-center of Suzhou Jiulong Hospital of the China Lung Cancer Prevention and Treatment Alliance”. With the strong support of the hospital and after nearly 20 years of unremitting efforts by all medical and nursing staff, the Department of Respiratory Medicine has achieved certain results in medical care, education and research, and has begun to take shape. Especially during the pandemic, the Department of Respiratory Medicine shouldered major responsibilities, took the lead and fought on every front; among them, Director Ji Ze served as captain of the Suzhou Industrial Park medical team sent to Shanghai to fight the epidemic and led 27 team members to successfully complete the anti-epidemic mission. 2. Bed capacity: There are currently 40 beds in operation, including 9 RICU beds. The department is staffed with dedicated RICU physicians and specialist nurses, and equipped with specialist equipment including invasive ventilators, non-invasive ventilators, high-flow oxygen therapy devices, monitors, bedside bronchoscopes, blood gas analyzers and bedside ultrasound. 3. Personnel team: There are currently 35 medical and nursing staff, including 15 physicians. Master's degrees account for 46.7% and doctoral degrees for 13%. Ten physicians have successively been sent to Shanghai Changhai Hospital, Zhongshan Hospital, and other major hospitals including the First and Second Affiliated Hospitals of Soochow University for further training, including bronchoscopic interventional diagnosis and treatment techniques, RICU specialized training, sleep-respiratory specialized training, and study at a Phase I clinical trial center. 4. Equipment configuration: The Department of Respiratory Medicine has bronchoscopy, pulmonary function and sleep-respiratory monitoring rooms as auxiliary units. Equipment includes Olympus electronic bronchoscopes (260/290 series), ultrasound mini-probes, medical thoracoscopes, German Jaeger pulmonary function testing instruments and FeNO detectors, and an Anbolan sleep-respiratory monitor, basically meeting the needs of the respiratory specialty. The respiratory RICU is equipped with multiple Newport and GE ventilators, high-flow oxygen therapy devices, Philips non-invasive ventilators, bedside ultrasound and blood gas equipment, and other equipment. 5. Clinical features: The department diagnoses and treats common and frequently occurring diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute and chronic respiratory failure, pulmonary nodules and lung cancer, severe infections and sepsis. It also has relatively extensive clinical experience in diagnosing and treating rare and difficult diseases such as pulmonary sequestration, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, ABPA, MALT and ANCA-associated vasculitis. The department routinely performs bronchoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary lesions, TBNA, removal of bronchial foreign bodies, tracheal stent implantation, etc.), treatment of critically ill respiratory patients, and other procedures. It has established several specialty outpatient clinics, such as a pulmonary nodule and lung cancer clinic, an asthma specialty clinic, a COPD clinic, a chronic cough clinic and a “snoring” clinic. 6. Scientific research and teaching: The department has undertaken teaching for standardized training of residents in internal medicine and general practice for many years and has received the title of Excellent Teaching Department multiple times. It currently provides internship teaching for multiple medical schools, including Soochow University Medical School.
