Health Education Department
International Peace Maternity & Child Health Hospital of China Welfare Institute
Health education at the International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital began in 1976. With the aim of serving women and children extensively, it is committed to teaching and disseminating health knowledge for women and children and conducting various health education activities; using entirely new health concepts, it builds a systematic, scientific, professional, and caring service platform for women at all stages of life and infants and young children aged 0–3 years.
Health education is closely integrated with clinical practice through a series of prenatal health education programs, including second-trimester care, third-trimester care, puerperal care, breastfeeding guidance, and a series of health-care education programs on infant rearing. Health education has also been extended to women in various stages of life, such as adolescence, the reproductive period, menopause, and old age, forming a complete lifelong health circle for women and enabling health care to better serve clinical practice.
Health education provides special services tailored to the needs of different groups, including distinctive prenatal courses and skills in prenatal nutrition, exercises for pregnant women, classes for expectant fathers, the Lamaze method of pain-relief childbirth, and expert lectures. Early education for infants and young children is also provided, including infant parent-child activities, Baby Competitions, Baby Kitchen, parenting consultations aligned with the growth of infants and young children, and special-topic lectures (series of lectures on intellectual development, early reading for infants and young children, and other topics), thereby meeting health education needs at different stages and forming systematic, family-oriented health education.
The health education teaching team consists of medical personnel from gynecology, obstetrics, and pediatrics, preschool education teachers, nutritionists, and other professionals. The health education teachers have won awards multiple times in teaching competitions in Shanghai.
The annual number of person-visits for our health education reaches several hundred thousand. In 2002, the health education program was named an Outstanding Project in the “Shanghai Big Study, Big Service” initiative; in 2003, it was named an “Outstanding Brand of Women’s Work in Shanghai”; in 2004, it was named by Xuhui District a Shanghai municipal “Excellent Parent School”; and in 2005, it was awarded the title of “National Family Education Experimental Base.” In 2008, it won first prize in the Shanghai Teaching Staff Teaching Competition; in 2010, the “DoHaD (Duha) Prenatal Nutrition School” received a nomination award for a Featured Project in the Development of Spiritual Civilization at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
