Laboratory Medicine

The Clinical Laboratory Department of the International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital is a medical laboratory integrating medical care, teaching, and research. At present, the department has developed to the point where the value of its medical equipment has reached 30 million yuan. The laboratory was built in accordance with the national Biosafety Level Ⅱ standard, with a usable area of approximately 1000-plus square meters. The department comprises 5 specialty groups: Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Immunology Group 1, Clinical Immunology Group 2, and Outpatient and Emergency Testing (including the Blood Bank). In accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Health, an AIDS preliminary screening laboratory was established in 2000. To meet clinical needs, it currently offers nearly 200 laboratory test items, and the number of reports sent daily exceeds 5000. It is now a teaching base for Shanghai Medical College, and the department undertakes all routine testing for all outpatients and inpatients throughout the hospital, as well as some research and teaching tasks.

The department conducts internal quality control for all testing items and participates in the internal quality control and external quality assessment activities specified by the Shanghai Center for Clinical Laboratory. For some testing items, it also participates in the external quality assessment conducted by the Ministry of Health Clinical Laboratory Center. It also participates in the external quality assessments for HIV conducted by the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention and for syphilis and gonococcus conducted by the Shanghai Center for Sexually Transmitted Disease Control, and has achieved satisfactory assessment results every year.
