Anaesthesiology
International Peace Maternity & Child Health Hospital of China Welfare Institute
The Department of Anesthesiology was established in 1965. It is a first-level clinical department integrating medical care, education, and research, with subspecialties in clinical anesthesiology, critical care medicine (ICU), and pain medicine. Its services cover multiple areas, including clinical anesthesia, monitoring and treatment of critically ill patients, emergency rescue and resuscitation, and pain treatment. The department has a well-developed management system, a highly qualified team, and advanced medical equipment, and enjoys an excellent reputation in the field of specialized obstetric and gynecologic anesthesia.
As the leading discipline for the hospital’s “comfort-oriented medical care” program and a key discipline for ensuring medical safety, the Department of Anesthesiology provides surgical anesthesia and analgesic treatment for the Departments of Gynecology, Obstetrics, Reproductive Medicine, Family Planning, and Breast Medicine. High-risk obstetric anesthesia, labor analgesia, ambulatory surgery anesthesia, and the anesthesiology pain clinic have distinctive subspecialty features. Anesthetic techniques include general anesthesia, neuraxial anesthesia, and nerve block anesthesia. Over the years, the department has accumulated extensive clinical experience in the treatment of patients requiring clinical anesthesia, monitoring and treatment of critically ill patients (ICU), and pain treatment.
The department is well equipped with advanced medical devices, including advanced anesthesia machines, electrocardiographic monitoring systems, cell salvage machines, thromboelastography analyzers, blood gas analyzers, B-ultrasound, fiberoptic bronchoscopes, electroencephalographic monitoring systems, neuromuscular blockade monitoring systems, temperature monitoring systems, and cardiac function monitoring systems. Techniques such as target-controlled anesthesia, depth-of-anesthesia monitoring, blood gas analysis, and neuromuscular blockade monitoring are widely used in clinical anesthesia. For critically ill cases, the department skillfully applies new technologies, including autologous blood reinfusion, thromboelastography analysis, and noninvasive cardiac output monitoring.
The department currently has 26 anesthesiologists, including 1 chief physician, 9 deputy chief physicians, and 12 attending physicians. Among them, 3 hold doctoral degrees, 2 are master’s supervisors, and more than 70% have a master’s degree or higher. As one of the first group of national pilot hospitals for labor analgesia, a standardized training base for specialist physicians in obstetric anesthesia in Shanghai, and the leading institution of the Obstetric Anesthesia Group of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association, the department provides training and guidance for anesthesiology trainees and obstetric anesthesia specialists from across the country. It organizes a national continuing education course on obstetric anesthesia and analgesia every year. In recent years, it has completed 1 national-level natural science project and more than 10 projects at the municipal or bureau level and above, and has published more than 30 professional papers, including more than 20 SCI papers.
The anesthesia team practices such anesthesia concepts as “the ideal anesthetic state,” “precision anesthesia management,” and “comfort-oriented medical care,” continuously improving its anesthesia capabilities and service quality so that patients, clinical surgical departments, and society as a whole can benefit from the development of the discipline. In recent years, the Department of Anesthesiology has received numerous collective honors, including Advanced Collective of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health, Advanced Demonstration Post for Party Members of the Publicity Department of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Advanced Demonstration Post for Party Members of the China Welfare Institute, Civilized Team of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and Civilized Team of the China Welfare Institute.
