Ophthalmology
| Department overview |--------------
Huashan Hospital Ophthalmology, founded at the hospital’s beginning and rebuilt in 1974 after the 1952 institutional adjustment, is a leading clinical center integrating care, teaching and research. Directors included Wei Yanze, Zhu Furun, Li Qiuhua, Ye Wen and Wang Zhiliang. In 2023 it had 25 doctors (6 chief and 11 associate chief physicians), more than 130,000 annual outpatient/emergency visits, 50 beds, 6 ophthalmic operating rooms and more than 10,000 operations. It performs minimally invasive vitreoretinal surgery for diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular and macular disease, ocular trauma and vitreoretinitis; complex cataract surgery; and was first in China to perform refractive cataract surgery with multifocal intraocular lenses. It specializes in infectious and neuro-ophthalmic disease and has nationally advanced care for optic neuritis, neuromyelitis optica, ocular-surface disease, orbital tumors/fractures, thyroid-related eye disease and ocular plastics.
With the focus on progressively refining specialties and encouraging physicians to develop subspecialty expertise, the ophthalmology departments at Huashan Hospital’s Baoshan, Pudong, and Hongqiao campuses were established successively in 2013.
| Subspecialty features |--------------
【Vitreoretinal】 Experts with doctoral or higher degrees and overseas training perform microscopic surgery for diabetic retinopathy, vascular disease, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, high-myopia fundus disease, vitreous hemorrhage and trauma; they pioneered artificial-vitreous-balloon implantation in China. Fundus laser, intravitreal injections and an all-year green channel are provided. More than 10 projects (9 national) were undertaken in 5 years, with publications in IOVS and Retina.
【Cataract】 World-class equipment and experience cover senile, complicated, traumatic and high-myopia-associated cataract, combined glaucoma-cataract surgery, secondary lens implantation and lens dislocation. The department pioneered premium-lens refractive cataract surgery in China and minimally invasive intrascleral lens fixation internationally; results appeared in JCRS and received a 2017 award.
【Infectious eye disease】 Professor Wang Zhiliang’s team established diagnostic and surgical procedures, treats severe systemic infections involving the eye with infectious-disease and antibiotic teams, and provides HIV-eye-disease education, free consultation, appointments and referrals. It completed Shanghai’s first AIDS ocular-complication survey, studied HIV entry into the eye, proposed the ocular HIV reservoir, and published more than 40 papers.
【Neuro-ophthalmology】 As a member of the Chinese network, it conducts multidisciplinary research and care for meningioma, pituitary tumors and Alzheimer disease, helped formulate optic-neuritis standards, leads 3 NSFC projects, holds an annual forum/course and published 6 SCI papers.
【Glaucoma】 All glaucoma surgery, pressure-reducing-valve implantation and minimally invasive vitrectomy for refractory glaucoma are performed.
【Refractive cornea】 LASIK, LASEK and other excimer procedures have been performed for more than 10 years to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Huashan is a designated corneal-transplant hospital; all 4 campuses screen and prevent childhood myopia.
【Orbital and ocular plastics】 The team treats orbital tumors/fractures and thyroid-related eye disease and performs difficult operations with neurosurgery. Procedures include botulinum injections, entropion/ectropion and ptosis correction, double-eyelid surgery, orbital implants, eyelid-trauma/tumor surgery, secondary reconstruction and strabismus correction; neurologists assist in treating myasthenic ptosis.
| Teaching |--------------
Huashan is part of Fudan’s national key ophthalmology discipline and a Shanghai residency and subspecialty training base; it gained subspecialty qualification in 2023. It has run a national neuro-ophthalmology continuing-education course for more than 10 years and cooperates with Louisville, Boston, National University of Singapore and other teams.
In 2014, it became the Shanghai regional standardized residency training base for ophthalmology.
| Research |--------------
It undertook 15 national projects (11 NSFC) and more than 10 provincial/ministerial projects, published over 90 papers and obtained 2 invention patents. HIV-eye research received 4 national, 4 Shanghai and 3 Shen-Kang projects and produced more than 40 SCI papers.
| Honors |--------------
In 2024, the Full-course Management Model for Patients with HIV Eye Disease won the Excellence Case award at the national hospital competition finals.

Under successive directors Wei Yanze, Zhu Furun, Li Qiuhua, Ye Wen, and Wang Zhiliang, Huashan Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department developed into a leading clinical center integrating medical care, teaching, and research; it is now China’s largest center for the diagnosis and treatment of infectious eye diseases. Vitreoretinal surgery success rates are at an internationally advanced level, and its annual cataract surgery volume ranks among the ophthalmology departments of general hospitals in Shanghai. As a Red Cross hospital, Huashan established a human-organ donation working group and is a designated corneal-transplant hospital. Across its four campuses, the department conducts myopia prevention and screening and maintains prevention records for childhood myopia.
