Sports Medicine
| Basic Overview |--------------
The Department of Sports Medicine of Huashan Hospital originated from the Department of Medical Physical Education of Shanghai Medical College. Established in 1958, it was one of the founding institutions of sports medicine and rehabilitation medicine in China. Its first director was Professor Fan Zhenhua. In 1999, Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery became an independent department. In 2005, Professor Chen Shiyi became director and established the Fudan University Sports Medicine Center, leading innovative development and transforming this historic department into today’s internationally renowned and nationally leading sports medicine discipline. In October 2022, Professor Hua Yinghui succeeded him as director. The department has continued its traditions in medicine, education and research, and has ranked second nationally for two consecutive years in “Sports Medicine” in Fudan University’s hospital specialty rankings.
The department is distributed across two campuses, with 45 beds and 34 medical staff. It has more than 90,000 outpatient visits and 6,000 operations annually. It is now a National Health Commission clinical key specialty in both “Sports Medicine” and “Sports Rehabilitation”; one of the first batch of national training bases for orthopedic arthroscopy diagnosis and treatment technology; the only ISAKOS-authorized and accredited “Arthroscopy and Sports Trauma Education and Training Center” in China; an APKASS education and training center; the principal department of a hospital cooperating with national teams; a designated medical-support hospital for Shanghai Olympic events and champions of the world’s three major competitions; and the chief medical officer unit for major international events in Shanghai.
| Discipline Structure and Medical Characteristics |--------------
The department comprises six units: Sports Trauma and Arthroscopic Surgery; Sports Rehabilitation and Postoperative Follow-up; the Fudan University Institute of Sports Medicine; the ISAKOS Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Training and Education (China) Center; the Sports Promotion for Health Center; and the Office of Medical Support for Major Events.
The Sports Trauma and Arthroscopic Surgery unit is renowned in China and abroad for preventing and treating sports injuries and performing arthroscopic surgery. Numerous technologies are internationally and nationally advanced. In particular, it has the world’s largest number of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction cases using artificial ligaments and enjoys international recognition and leadership. It pioneered quasi-isometric anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, achieving a 99% surgical success rate and a return-to-sport rate above 90%, at the international leading level. Professor Chen Shiyi invented arthroscopic transfer of the long head of the biceps tendon to augment repair of massive rotator cuff tears; because it is simple, effective and economical, it is known abroad as the “Chinese way.” Professor Hua Yinghui has developed minimally invasive foot and ankle arthroscopic techniques that have improved treatment of ankle instability, ankle osteochondral injuries and other conditions; these techniques have been cited in multiple guidelines and consensus statements.
The sports-rehabilitation subspecialty was China’s first sports-rehabilitation institution established within an arthroscopic-surgery department. Professor Chen Shiyi was the first in China to advocate “sports medicine, function above all, early rehabilitation, and return to sport” as treatment principles. Postoperative rehabilitation follows international models and emphasizes professionalism, individualization and humanity. In 2023, it was approved for construction as a National Health Commission key specialty. The center covers 430 square meters and has 1 rehabilitation physician and 9 full-time sports-rehabilitation therapists; it includes trauma and pathological rehabilitation, return-to-sport rehabilitation, and a sports-performance assessment laboratory. In December 2023, it was awarded the title “Shanghai Medical-Sports Integration—Sports Promotion for Health Innovation Center” by the Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau and Health Commission.
