General Surgery Vascular Surgery Center
| Department Overview and Specialty Features |--------------
The Vascular Surgery Specialty Group of the General Surgery Department at Huashan Hospital was founded in the 1970s under the leadership of Professor Xue Guanghua. It was one of the earliest institutions in China to perform vascular surgery. From its early days, the specialty group became nationally renowned for the surgical treatment of venous diseases, Budd–Chiari syndrome, and portal hypertension. It was also among the first in China to perform vascular bypass surgery using autologous veins and artificial vascular grafts, and participated in the development of the first domestic silk artificial blood vessel.
After 50 years of development, the department has consistently remained at the forefront of the discipline and has earned a national reputation for the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases, technological innovation, and academic contributions. In July 2024, the Huashan Hospital General Surgery Department Vascular Surgery Center was established. The center has now developed a core technical system characterized by the surgical treatment of carotid atherosclerotic stenosis, endovascular treatment of complex lower-extremity arterial occlusive diseases, minimally invasive treatment of complex aortic diseases, comprehensive treatment of lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis, and the creation and repair of vascular dialysis access for end-stage renal disease.
Building on its existing areas of strength, the department has further expanded its diagnostic and treatment directions and, in collaboration with relevant departments, established the “Diabetic Foot Multidisciplinary MDT” and “Pulmonary Vascular Disease Multidisciplinary MDT” teams. New breakthroughs have been achieved in limb-salvage treatment for severe ischemia of diabetic limbs and the rescue and treatment of high-risk pulmonary embolism, making the diagnosis and treatment of difficult and severe diseases a new growth area. At present, the department performs an average of more than 1,500 minimally invasive and conventional operations each year, combining extensive clinical experience with outstanding technical capabilities.
| Teaching and Research |--------------
As a doctoral training site in vascular surgery at Fudan University, the department has achieved significant results in talent development. It has trained more than 30 master’s and doctoral students and built a high-level academic team consisting of professors, associate professors, and attending physicians.
In recent years, the department has undertaken multiple projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and key scientific research projects at the provincial and municipal levels. It has published more than 10 academic papers in top domestic and international journals and has successively received honors including the Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Progress Award and recognition as a Shanghai Key Specialty.
In addition, the department has achieved remarkable results in scientific and technological innovation. In particular, the “Percutaneous Carotid Revascularization with Flow-Reversal Cerebral Protection (PCAR) Procedure, ” for which the department has complete independent intellectual property rights, has obtained multiple invention patents. In cooperation with relevant enterprises, the department has successfully achieved the clinical translation of these achievements, making an important contribution to promoting the application and industrialization of vascular surgery technologies.
