Radiology
| General Overview |--------------
The Department of Radiology at Huashan Hospital, Fudan University was founded in 1933 by Professor Zou Zhong, a renowned Chinese radiologist and medical educator. After more than 90 years of development and the efforts of several generations, it has become one of the departments with strong technical capabilities, advanced equipment and outstanding achievements in medical care, teaching and research, with distinctive features. In 1997 it was rated by the National Education Commission as a "Project 211" key discipline in imaging medicine; its discipline site was among the earliest doctoral programs in China, and in 2001, together with neurology and neurosurgery, it was rated by Fudan University as a discipline of the highest priority. In 2002 it was designated a key discipline of the Ministry of Education, and in 2017 it was rated a Shanghai clinical key specialty. The Department of Radiology of Huashan Hospital formerly served as the chair institution of the Chinese Society of Radiology, and is currently the home of the Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Intelligent Imaging for Major Brain Diseases, the Institute of Functional and Molecular Imaging of Fudan University and the editorial office of the Chinese Journal of Medical Computer Imaging. Integrating diagnosis and treatment, it has been awarded by the Chinese Stroke Society the status of China Regional Training and Quality Control Demonstration Center for Neurointervention, and is among the first neurointervention training bases of the National Health Commission.
| Subspecialties and Equipment |--------------
The Department of Radiology covers a full range of specialties, including diagnostic imaging, interventional therapy, focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment and adjunct stereotactic radiosurgery. It has formed distinctive subspecialty groups in neuroradiology, abdominal imaging, chest imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, spine and spinal cord imaging, interventional radiology, radiomics and molecular imaging, treating approximately 0.8–1 million patient visits per year over the past five years. The department is fully equipped with imaging diagnostic and interventional devices: 15 high-field MRI units, including 2 intraoperative-navigation 3T MRI units; 15 high-end spiral CT scanners of various types, including GE Gemstone and Philips 256-slice, of which 3 are mobile CT units; 11 high-end large DSA systems and 1 MR-guided focused ultrasound knife; and modern operating rooms for interventional and HIFU knife treatment.
| Talent Team and Education |--------------
The department has a well-structured talent team: it has 177 staff members, including 65 physicians, of whom 16 are chief physicians, 9 associate chief physicians, 26 attending physicians and 14 residents. Among the physicians there are 10 doctoral supervisors and 3 master's supervisors; 52 hold doctoral degrees, 12 master's degrees and 1 bachelor's degree. Over the past five years, more than 40 master's and doctoral students have graduated from the department. It has long been responsible for teaching "Medical Imaging" to graduate, undergraduate and international students at Fudan University, and holds 3 national-level continuing education projects annually. In 2010 it established a radiology residency training base to strengthen residency training, and each year it provides continuing education for 30 visiting physicians from across the country, supplying the nation with large numbers of competitive imaging professionals. Since its founding, nearly 100 people trained here have been transferred as directors or deputy directors to other hospitals in China and abroad.
| Research and Honors |--------------
The senior and junior expert teams have successively won a series of awards, including the "National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize" (first completer: Geng Daoying), the "State Science and Technology Commission Invention Third Prize," the "Shanghai Science and Technology Progress First Prize," the "Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress First Prize," the "Chinese Medical Association Science and Technology Progress Third Prize," the "Wuzhou Women's Science and Technology Award" and the "Ministry of Health Science and Technology Progress Third Prize." In the field of science popularization, it won the first prize of the Shanghai Science Popularization Innovation Award. In the field of medical-engineering integration, the research achievements led by Professor Geng Daoying's team and successfully translated into products obtained registration certificates for Class III medical devices from China's National Medical Products Administration, and won the gold award of the Shanghai Excellent Invention Selection Competition. In recent years the department has cultivated many outstanding talents, including 1 Shanghai Leading Talent, 1 leader of the Oriental Talent Program (Leadership Project), 2 Shanghai Outstanding Academic Leaders, 1 Young Yangtze River Scholar of the Ministry of Education, 1 Shanghai Dawn Scholar, 1 young talent of the National Key Special Program for the Four Major Chronic Diseases, 2 Shanghai Pujiang Talents (Category A), 2 winners of the Shanghai Yangfan Program, 5 Shanghai "Medical Star" talents and 1 "Morning Star" of Shanghai's "Science and Technology Innovation Action Plan."
