General Practice

Huashan Hospital’s Department of General Practice was established in September 2021. It currently has a medical team of 7 and a nursing team of 11. The current director of the Department of General Practice is Professor Huang Yanyan, who also serves as the director of the General Practice training base, a master’s supervisor in the clinical specialty of general practice, and the PI of the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases (Huashan).

The general practice outpatient clinic is an important service window of the Department of General Practice, with more than 70,000 outpatient visits annually. It not only receives first-visit patients from all over the country, but also serves as the hub for coordination between different levels of the regional medical alliance. The general practice outpatient clinic includes specialist clinics, disease-specific clinics, general clinics, and internet-based services. Both Huashan Hospital’s Main Campus and Hongqiao Campus offer general practice general and specialist clinics. The Main Campus general clinic is open all day from Monday to Saturday, and the specialist clinic is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons. The Hongqiao Campus general clinic is open from Monday to Friday, and the specialist clinic is open on Tuesday afternoons. The general practice disease-specific clinic for the comprehensive management of patients with multiple coexisting diseases is open on Monday afternoons. Internet-based medical services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The department also has a general practice ward, located in Ward 816 of Huashan Hospital’s Main Campus, with 22 approved beds. The ward discharges more than 1,000 patients annually. The general practice ward is characterized by the integration of general and specialty care, working with various specialties to provide comprehensive management and diagnosis and treatment for a range of internal medicine and surgical diseases, including common internal medicine diseases, patients with multiple coexisting diseases, and comprehensive perioperative management throughout the entire process of surgical care. At the same time, the general practice nursing team is patient-centered, developing individualized nursing plans and integrating whole-process health education inside and outside the hospital to provide patients with a high-quality inpatient experience.

In addition to clinical work, the Department of General Practice has also developed distinctive strengths in research and education. In research, the general practice team has led or participated in more than 10 projects at or above the provincial- and ministerial-level, published more than 100 articles in core journals in China and abroad, and published more than 20 SCI articles.

The Department of General Practice undertakes the standardized training of general practitioners in Shanghai. The general practice training base’s teaching and research group collaborates with the teaching and research teams of other clinical departments to develop individualized training plans for trainees. There are currently 28 trainees in training, including 21 trainees in the four-certificates-in-one program. The base’s director of education and education secretary were respectively awarded the titles of 2023 Outstanding Department-Level Director of Education and Outstanding Department-Level Education Secretary, and the general practice teaching team received the 2024 Outstanding Department-Level Teaching Team Award. A total of 21 residents received the honor of “Outstanding Trainee in the Standardized Training of Residents in Shanghai,” and 16 residents received the honor of “Outstanding Trainee in the Standardized Training of Residents at Fudan University Shanghai Medical College.”
