General Surgery Ward 10
The Department of General Surgery of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University is a National Clinical Key Specialty designated by the Ministry of Health and a National Key Cultivation Discipline designated by the Ministry of Education. Ward 10 of General Surgery at the Second Hospital of Harbin Medical University (Colorectal and Anal Surgery) was established on January 1, 2014. It focuses primarily on the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal and anal diseases. The department has a strong technical team, including 2 doctoral supervisors, 2 master's supervisors, 3 chief physicians, 6 associate chief physicians, and 6 staff members with doctoral degrees, 4 of whom are postdoctoral fellows. The nursing team consists of 14 members, including 1 with a master's degree and 12 with bachelor's degrees. The department currently has 46 open beds and performs more than 1,500 operations annually on average.
Ward 10 of General Surgery performs a wide range of highly complex procedures and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of common, frequently occurring, and difficult diseases in general surgery. Examples include laparoscopic radical resection of colorectal cancer, laparoscopic radical resection of gastric cancer, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and appendectomy, and surgery for benign and malignant thyroid and breast tumors. The department's main research areas and diseases for which it provides specialized diagnosis and treatment include hemorrhoids, anal fistula, anal fissure, constipation, perianal abscess, rectal prolapse, and pelvic-floor and anal trauma; benign and malignant colorectal tumors, intestinal obstruction, short bowel syndrome, gastrointestinal bleeding, and adult congenital megacolon; radiation enteritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, rectovaginal fistula, and superior mesenteric artery syndrome (duodenal stasis syndrome); as well as thyroid, gastrointestinal, breast, hepatobiliary, and other general surgical diseases. In addition, Ward 10 undertakes the routine emergency and critical-care services of the Second Hospital of Harbin Medical University and can diagnose and treat critically ill and severely injured patients with acute surgical abdomen, abdominal trauma, and other emergency conditions.
The department performs minimally invasive procedures, including PPH (stapled hemorrhoidopexy, or procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids) for mixed hemorrhoids, which involves minimal trauma, less pain, a low recurrence rate, and early discharge. It is highly regarded by patients and is at an advanced level nationally. PPH combined with columnar suture is used to treat mild-to-moderate rectal prolapse, with satisfactory postoperative clinical outcomes; the results have been published in several national core journals. The Altemeier procedure is used to treat severe rectal prolapse, with confirmed efficacy, a low postoperative recurrence rate, and minimal trauma. The department was the first in the province to perform selective hemorrhoidal mucosectomy for mixed hemorrhoids, achieving significant efficacy and reaching an advanced level in China. The department has extensive clinical experience in managing difficult colorectal and anal diseases and surgical complications, particularly in sphincter-preserving surgery for low and ultra-low rectal cancer, thereby greatly improving postoperative quality of life for patients with low rectal cancer. It was among the first in China to perform circumferential duodenal drainage for the difficult condition of superior mesenteric artery syndrome (benign duodenal stasis syndrome), achieving significant efficacy and earning high patient satisfaction. Giant presacral tumors are removed through a transsacral anterior approach; although technically demanding, this procedure causes little trauma, is less costly, and enables rapid postoperative recovery. In addition, the department performs other highly complex procedures, including resection of giant duodenal gastrointestinal stromal tumors, resection of giant intra-abdominal tumors, total colectomy with ileal end reservoir construction and ileorectal anastomosis for slow-transit constipation, and intestinal tube splinting for recurrent intestinal obstruction. These procedures have been reported by multiple media outlets, and their efficacy has been well established.
