General Surgery Ward 9

General Surgery Ward 9 (Breast Surgery Ward 2) of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University combines clinical care, research and teaching in the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease. It was first established in 2008 and became a separate ward in 2022, when Professor Guo Baoliang was appointed director. In 2001, Professor Guo went to Shiga University of Medical Science in Japan on a government-sponsored doctoral program; in 2008 he joined the University of California San Diego molecular biology center as a specially appointed researcher. He focuses on surgery and systemic treatment for breast cancer, serves on national breast cancer academic committees and has contributed to national treatment guidelines. The ward has 17 medical and nursing staff; its doctors include four professors, one associate professor, two doctoral supervisors and four master's supervisors. Two staff members studied in the United States or Japan for more than one year. The ward has 45 beds, one dedicated day-procedure operating room, one specialist color ultrasound and an Anke minimally invasive vacuum-assisted excision system. It performs minimally invasive excision of benign breast tumors, venous infusion-port implantation, breast-conserving cancer surgery, sentinel lymph node biopsy, breast reconstruction and cosmetic surgery, and endoscopic radical breast cancer surgery. The hospital describes these services as advanced nationally and provincially and notes the department's early establishment in the province and participation in breast cancer societies and guideline development. It reports several new techniques, three National Natural Science Foundation projects, projects from the Ministry of Education and Heilongjiang and Harbin authorities, over 50 SCI-indexed papers and over 100 papers in Chinese core journals.
