Pediatric Internal Medicine
The Department of Pediatric Internal Medicine of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University was established in 1956. In 1987, it was authorized to confer master’s degrees, and in 2004, it was authorized as a doctoral degree-granting site in Heilongjiang Province. It is a nationally approved standardized training base for pediatric residents and the Heilongjiang Provincial Pediatric Respiratory Specialty Quality Control Center. Each year, it undertakes the teaching of theoretical courses for the five-year and seven-year programs and the Clinical Medicine (5+3 integrated) program, as well as the training and assessment of master’s students. Pediatric Internal Medicine Ward 1 currently has 32 beds and 35 medical and nursing staff, including 20 doctors: 8 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, and 8 attending physicians; among them are 3 doctoral supervisors and 7 master’s supervisors.
The department director places great emphasis on the development of pediatric subspecialties. The department has established subspecialty treatment groups including the Respiratory Group, Neurology Group, Circulation Group, Rheumatology and Immunology Group, Nephrology Group, Hematology Group, and Endocrinology Group. In respiratory medicine, our department has one German Jaeger infant and young-child pulmonary function testing instrument, which can be used to perform pulmonary function tests in children. It also has German PARI and Omron air-compression nebulization inhalation pumps, meeting the nebulization inhalation needs of children receiving outpatient and inpatient care. The department is equipped with vital-sign monitors, ECG and blood-oxygen monitors, precision infusion pumps, and multifunctional postural sputum-clearance machines, providing strong equipment support for the rescue of critically ill children and improving the success rate of resuscitation. In 2018, pediatric bronchoscopy was successfully introduced, providing strong support for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of pediatric respiratory diseases such as infectious diseases and bronchial asthma. The Pediatric Gastroenterology Group has also gradually matured. With the support of the endoscopy unit of our hospital’s Department of Gastroenterology, it performs pediatric gastrointestinal endoscopy, improving the diagnostic rate of digestive-system diseases. It mainly diagnoses and treats common and frequently occurring digestive diseases, including diarrheal disease, acute and chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, Helicobacter pylori infection, hepatobiliary diseases, allergic gastroenteropathy, and inflammatory bowel disease. The Neurology Group actively carries out the prevention and treatment of cerebral palsy and epilepsy. By monitoring antiepileptic drug concentrations, it guides the scientific use of medication in children with epilepsy and has received wide acclaim from patients. The treatment of pediatric epilepsy has developed its own distinctive features, enabling patients to receive timely and accurate treatment. Through MICM classification research on childhood leukemia, sternal bone-marrow aspiration using a scalp-vein needle, HDMTX for the prevention of pediatric cerebral leukemia, and MTX drug-concentration monitoring, the Hematology Group has achieved excellent results in treating childhood leukemia. The long-term survival rate of children with leukemia has been greatly improved, and the number of leukemia patients surviving disease-free continues to increase. In our province, the Urology Group actively carries out renal examination techniques—including renal puncture, with the youngest patient currently undergoing the procedure being 4 years old—and pediatric blood-purification therapy. These programs make the diagnosis of patients with kidney disease more accurate and evidence-based, enabling appropriate and timely treatment. The Rheumatology and Immunology Group actively carries out standardized diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic and immunological diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. At present, the rheumatic and immunological diseases of many children have been brought under control, allowing them to return to normal life.
