Ophthalmic Imaging Center
The Ophthalmic Imaging and Treatment Center at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University was founded in 1993 as an ophthalmic function room, renamed the auxiliary examination center in 2007 and formally named the Ophthalmic Imaging and Treatment Center in November 2023. It was among the first in Heilongjiang to use Heidelberg retinal tomography (HRT) of the optic nerve head for glaucoma and visual field testing. The hospital describes its equipment, services and training as nationally advanced. The center combines eye examinations, imaging consultations, laser treatment, teaching and research. Located in Zone F on the fourth outpatient floor, it offers anterior and posterior segment structural and functional testing. Equipment includes digital slit-lamp photography, dry-eye analysis, corneal topography, confocal microscopy and endothelial cell counting, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), biometry, anterior segment OCT, OCT and OCT angiography (OCTA), stereoscopic fundus photography, wide-field scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO), ocular A/B ultrasound, Humphrey visual field testing, electrophysiology, anterior segment YAG/SLT lasers and multiwavelength fundus lasers. Its trained physicians, technicians and nurses perform examinations and interpret results. Staff include two associate chief physicians with doctorates, two technicians with master's degrees and two nurses with bachelor's degrees. The center reports over 80,000 examinations and imaging diagnoses and 5,000 anterior or posterior segment laser treatments annually. Specialty treatments include retinal photocoagulation for diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion and retinal tears, and YAG/SLT treatment for posterior capsular opacification and glaucoma. Staff helped draft Heilongjiang consensus standards for retinal imaging and glaucoma laser treatment, participated in over 20 multicenter clinical studies and contributed to five specialist examination books.
