Neurosurgery Ward 5
The Department of Neurosurgery of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University has a long history. Its professional structure is comprehensive and its technical strength is outstanding, and it has long enjoyed a nationwide reputation. Under the leadership of Professor Jiang Chuanlu, the academic leader, and Director Professor Guo Mian, Neurosurgery Ward Five takes precision and targeting as its distinctive diagnostic and treatment features. It emphasizes optimizing and integrating disciplinary resources and functions, strengthening the implementation of medical safety and standards, valuing the leading role of medical innovation, expanding international and domestic professional exchange and cooperation, adhering to a patient-oriented service philosophy, refining specialized technologies and management, and fostering a culture of teamwork. It is committed to building an outstanding specialty led by functional neurosurgery, providing patients with high-level medical services wholeheartedly. On the basis of treating common and frequently occurring neurosurgical diseases, it has gradually developed its own characteristics; the treatment of functional neurosurgical diseases has become a special focus of Neurosurgery Ward Five and is widely recognized by patients.
Neurosurgery Ward Five has 50 beds and 7 doctors, including 2 chief physicians/professors, 2 deputy chief physicians/associate professors, and 3 lecturers/attending physicians. It has 1 doctoral supervisor, 1 master's supervisor, and 22 nursing staff at various levels. The department admits more than 1,400 patients and performs 1,200 operations each year.

Neurosurgery Ward Five brings together many experts and talented professionals. Under the leadership of Director Professor Guo Mian, the department constantly pursues excellence in diagnostic and treatment technology and seeks breakthroughs. In addition to routinely performing grade-four operations such as brain-tumor surgery, it was the first in the province to perform deep-brain stimulation (DBS) and spinal-cord stimulation (SCS) arousal operations for patients with chronic coma, cervical seventh-nerve transfer for hemiplegia, and SCS operations for diabetic foot. It was also the first in the province to introduce the Sino neurosurgical surgical robot, which can perform difficult procedures including stereotactic drilling and drainage for deep cerebral hemorrhage and brain abscess, stereotactic brain biopsy, placement of an Ommaya reservoir for intracranial cystic lesions, and DBS surgery. DBS operations led by Professor Guo Mian offer the advantages of adjustability, reversibility, and minimally invasive treatment, and have become a recognized effective treatment for Parkinson disease, Meige syndrome, and other diseases, with significant clinical results. In particular, the first surgical treatment of Alzheimer disease in Heilongjiang Province, led by him, opened a new era of treatment. Through Director Guo Mian’s continuous innovation and refinement of surgical techniques, surgical results have improved greatly, with an overall effectiveness rate of 90%. The department is one of the earliest and higher-volume centers in China to perform LVA surgery in neurosurgery and is at an advanced level. Deputy Director Professor Wang Xiaofeng is dedicated to research into functional neurological diseases and has developed long-term EEG monitoring, intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring, trigeminal nerve balloon compression, and many other technologies. Professor Zhao Zhefeng performs microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia, with good results and a continually increasing number of cases. Professor Li Yang performs minimally invasive lumboperitoneal shunting for normal-pressure hydrocephalus, avoiding ventricular puncture. The department has advantages in neuroendoscopic surgery for pituitary tumors, cholesteatomas, intraventricular tumors, meningiomas, trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, cerebral hemorrhage, and other conditions, with satisfactory clinical results.
Teaching and research
The department undertakes extensive scientific research and teaching duties and several National Natural Science Foundation research projects. Each year it publishes multiple high-quality papers indexed in SCI. It is responsible for teaching five-year undergraduate students, 5+3 graduate students, master's students, doctoral students, and international students at Harbin Medical University. It is a standardized training base for neurosurgical residents and specialists in China, a member hospital of the Northeast Brain Glioma Diagnosis and Treatment Alliance, a member institution of the National Neurological Disease Specialty Alliance, and a training base for neurosurgical specialist physicians for county-level hospital backbone specialists. It is also a key discipline of the Heilongjiang Province 211 Project and a provincial key discipline, an authorized site for doctoral and master's degrees, and a first-class discipline of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University. In the 2022 Fudan University China Hospital Specialty Reputation Ranking, it received the 16th-place nomination among hospitals for neurosurgery.
