Ophthalmology Ward 3

The Ophthalmology Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University was established in 1954. Under the successive leadership of several generations of renowned ophthalmology experts such as Professors Jing Chongde, Wang Baolin, Lü Shirong and Yuan Huiping, the Ophthalmology Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University has become one of the nationally renowned ophthalmology centers and a Heilongjiang provincial key discipline. In 2009 it was approved as a standardized physician (residency) training base of the Ministry of Health; in 2012 it was approved as a national clinical key specialty construction project; in 2017 the glaucoma specialty was selected as a first-class specialty under key hospital construction; in 2018 it took the lead in establishing the Northeast Four Provinces Glaucoma Alliance; in 2020 it was approved as the Heilongjiang Provincial Branch of the National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Diseases, and in the same year took the lead in establishing the Heilongjiang Fundus Disease Alliance; in 2022 it was approved as the Clinical and Research Center for Diabetic Retinopathy.

Today, the expert team of the Ophthalmology Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University is strong. Under the leadership of Professor Sun Dawei — director of ophthalmology, discipline leader and head of the teaching and research section — medical care, teaching, research and academic standards continue to write new glories. The medical team has 34 teachers, including 16 professors and 8 associate professors; 10 doctoral supervisors and 19 master's supervisors. It is responsible for the theoretical and clinical teaching of regular undergraduate students, clinical medicine 5+3 program students, postgraduate students and international students. The clinical work of the ophthalmology department covers ten sub-specialties, including glaucoma, fundus diseases, cataract, corneal and ocular surface diseases, oculoplastic and orbital diseases, ocular trauma, strabismus and pediatric eye diseases, uveitis, optometry and medical refraction (optometric fitting).

The ophthalmology department includes seven units: the ophthalmology outpatient clinic, the ophthalmology inpatient ward, the ophthalmology central operating room, the ophthalmology refractive surgery center, the ophthalmology imaging center, the intravitreal injection center and the ophthalmic prosthesis center. The department's technical units are complete and its professional equipment is well developed. For three consecutive years from 2020 to 2022, it was a nominated hospital (top 20 nationwide) in the ophthalmology specialty of the Fudan University Hospital Ranking (National Specialty Reputation Ranking) and the only nominated hospital in Northeast China; in 2021 and 2022 it ranked first in ophthalmology in Northeast China.

Ophthalmology Ward No. 3 possesses domestically leading diagnostic and treatment technologies for fundus diseases, cataract and glaucoma; especially in the fields of fundus diseases and cataract it has first-class domestic technical standards, and it has particularly unique insights and experience in complex fundus diseases, uveitis and ocular trauma. All the physicians of the department, led by Director Wang Shaowei, can independently perform level-4 (highest-grade) surgeries, contributing important strength to the diagnosis and treatment of the whole ophthalmology department of the Second Affiliated Hospital. The ward has long-term and stable research directions, presiding over a total of 6 national, provincial and departmental (bureau-level) research projects; it has won 4 first prizes and 2 second prizes for new medical technologies of Heilongjiang Province and Harbin Medical University; and has published more than 10 SCI papers as first author. Its teaching is distinctive with relatively outstanding results: the doctoral and master's graduates it has trained are spread across the whole country, and its graduate students already possess the competence of clinical resident physicians upon graduation, playing important roles in their respective posts.
