The Department of Medical Ultrasound of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University was founded in 1993 and is a comprehensive department integrating medical care, teaching and scientific research. At present, it offers ultrasound subspecialty diagnostic and therapeutic services covering cardiac, abdominal, obstetric and gynecological, superficial organs (thyroid, breast, salivary glands, etc.), musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, neonatal, interventional and other fields, with distinctive features and authority. It currently has 45 medical and nursing staff, including 6 chief physicians, 13 associate chief physicians, 21 attending physicians, 5 residents and 1 nurse-in-charge. There are 3 doctoral supervisors and 11 master's supervisors. The department covers a total area of about 2,700 square meters, currently has 41 routine consultation rooms and 2 ultrasound interventional consultation rooms, and owns a total of 56 ultrasound devices.

The Department of Medical Ultrasound has ranked among the top five in the Fudan University (Shanghai) national best specialty rankings for 8 consecutive years from 2014 to 2021, has retained first place in Northeast China, and its overall level stands in the country's first tier. The Department of Medical Ultrasound is a Clinical Key Specialty of the former National Health and Family Planning Commission, a key discipline of Heilongjiang Province, an advantageous discipline of Harbin Medical University, a first-class discipline of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, the doctoral and master's degree awarding site for the ultrasound specialty of Harbin Medical University, the Heilongjiang Provincial Medical Imaging (Ultrasound) Quality Control Center, the Heilongjiang Ultrasound Specialty Training Base, the chair institution of the Heilongjiang Ultrasound Medicine Specialty Alliance, and the leading-unit institution of the Ministry of Education's provincial-ministerial jointly built key laboratory; it is also a 'National Worker Pioneer Advanced Collective', the host institution of the Heilongjiang Ultrasound Medical Engineering Society, the chair unit of the Ultrasound Committee of the Heilongjiang Medical Doctors Association, and a Heilongjiang Province 'Women Making Achievements' advanced collective. The department's medical staff have won 58 provincial medical new technology awards in total; it has led 25 National Natural Science Foundation projects (including 2 key projects); it has published 374 papers, 121 of which are SCI-indexed (highest impact factor 15.304), and has obtained 6 national patents.

At present, the department performs routine and three-dimensional ultrasound examinations of organs throughout the body, as well as ultrasound elastography, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (heart, liver, kidney, vessels, thyroid, breast, etc.), systematic fetal prenatal screening, pelvic floor ultrasound, hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography, musculoskeletal and joint ultrasound, neonatal hip ultrasound, cranial and lung ultrasound, gastrointestinal ultrasound, right heart contrast echocardiography and other services. In addition, it also performs ultrasound-guided puncture biopsy, ultrasound-guided thermal ablation of thyroid, breast and liver nodules, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy of cysts, ultrasound-guided percutaneous transhepatic interventional treatment of liver abscesses (cysts), ultrasound-guided biliary puncture drainage, ultrasound-guided renal biopsy, ultrasound-guided amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling and umbilical cord blood sampling, and other interventional diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
