Neurosurgery Ward I
Neurosurgery Ward 1 is the birthplace of the Department of Neurosurgery of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University and the cradle for cultivating neurosurgical talent. Founded in 1959, it is a key discipline of Heilongjiang Province's "211 Project" and a provincial key discipline, a doctoral degree authorization point, a first-class discipline of the Second Affiliated Hospital of HMU, and one of the first national neurosurgery specialized training bases. It is a member unit of the National Clinical Research Center for Neurological Diseases — Neurological Diseases Specialty Alliance, a member of the brain tumor multidisciplinary collaboration group of the National Center for Neurological Disorders, the center of the Northeast China Brain Glioma Diagnosis and Treatment Alliance, a Neuroendoscopy Physician Training Base of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a member unit of the China Pituitary Adenoma Collaboration Group, a clinical collaboration unit for the minimally invasive evacuation of intracranial hematomas — a project promoted by the National Health Commission — and a sub-center of the Spinal Minimally Invasive Alliance of the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases. It carried out and completed Heilongjiang Province's first awake craniotomy resection of eloquent-area glioma, developed key molecular pathological marker detection technologies for glioma, and its diagnosis and treatment of ruptured aneurysms, of glioma, and the surgical treatment of giant tumors of the anterior cranial fossa crossing the midline won first and second prizes for new technology application from Heilongjiang Province and the Provincial Health Department. It has now developed into a medical, teaching, and research center with renown at home and abroad.
Neurosurgery Ward 1 is a brain glioma diagnosis and treatment center integrating surgery, chemotherapy, drug clinical trials, and more. Professor Yang Lizhuang, Professor Jiang Chuanlu, and Professor Yang Haicheng have successively served as directors of neurosurgery and of the department. Under the leadership of the current director, Professor Yang Haicheng, the department has 12 physicians — 4 chief physicians, 5 associate chief physicians, and 3 attending physicians — all holding doctoral degrees in medicine, including 3 doctoral supervisors and 8 master's supervisors, plus a nursing team of 14. Neurosurgery Ward 1 currently has 72 beds, nearly 5,000 outpatient visits per year, and admits nearly 2,000 inpatients annually, performing more than 1,500 neurosurgical operations of various kinds each year. Its scope of care mainly includes: common cranial and spinal tumors such as glioma, meningioma, brain metastases, pituitary tumors, acoustic neuromas, and spinal canal schwannomas; common cranial nerve functional diseases such as hemifacial spasm, trigeminal neuralgia, and glossopharyngeal neuralgia; common congenital cranial disorders such as hydrocephalus and Chiari malformation (cerebellar tonsil herniation); common cerebrovascular diseases such as vascular malformations and aneurysms; neurological critical illnesses such as cerebral hemorrhage and craniocerebral trauma; and common spinal disorders such as cervical and lumbar disc herniation and spinal meningiomas.
【Featured care】 1. Neuro-oncology: awake surgery for eloquent-area glioma, multimodal surgery for insular glioma, yellow-fluorescence-guided intraoperative navigation and ultrasound-guided resection of high-grade glioma, and multidisciplinary (MDT) comprehensive care for neuro-oncology are the specialty's distinctive strengths. 2. Cranial nerve functional diseases: microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery with electrophysiological monitoring for hemifacial spasm, trigeminal neuralgia, and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. 3. Complex skull-base meningiomas: resection of tumors in the foramen magnum region, petroclival region, clivus, jugular foramen, and cavernous sinus. 4. Infratentorial tumors: facial nerve—preserving and hearing—preserving surgery for vestibular schwannoma under electrophysiological monitoring. 5. Complex cerebrovascular diseases: intracranial–extracranial bypass surgery for giant aneurysms, moyamoya disease, and similar conditions. 6. Minimally invasive neuroendoscopic treatment of pituitary tumors, craniopharyngiomas, tuberculum sellae meningiomas, hydrocephalus, and cerebral hemorrhage. 7. Intraoperative Mapping and ECoG for epilepsy focus resection. 8. Minimally invasive treatment of spinal disorders such as cervical and lumbar disc herniation, tethered cord syndrome, and spinal meningiomas.
【Science, education, and innovation】 Neurosurgery Ward 1 has always valued the parallel advancement of clinical care, research, and teaching, each reinforcing the others. In recent years its members have published more than 100 academic papers in top international journals, leading neurosurgical journals, and renowned core journals; they have led dozens of projects including key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, general NSFC projects, and provincial and ministerial research projects, and have won the Heilongjiang Science and Technology Progress Award, the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, and other honors. The ward undertakes teaching for undergraduates, master's and doctoral students, and international students, and leads a number of provincial and ministerial education and teaching research projects, winning a provincial gold medal in the "Internet+" College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.
All the medical and nursing staff of Neurosurgery Ward 1 uphold the principles of "striving for perfection, pursuing excellence," treating every patient's care, every research innovation, and every trainee with wholehearted dedication.
