Thoracic Surgery Ward II
The Department of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University has a history of more than 60 years since its establishment. In 1953, Professor Zhao Shijie led the establishment of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery, which was the first in the province to perform highly complex operations such as lobectomy and esophageal cancer resection. In 1983, the Department of Thoracic Surgery became independent from the Department of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery. In 1988, Professor Xia Qiuming became Director of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery; the patient who underwent heart transplantation in 1992 became the case with the longest survival time and the highest quality of life in Asia. Through the efforts of our predecessors and teachers, the Department of Thoracic Surgery has continued to develop and grow, with the numbers of patients admitted and operations performed continuously increasing; in 2013, the number of operations reached 1500. In January 2014, the hospital expanded the Department of Thoracic Surgery to two wards, with Professor Xu Guangquan serving as Director of the Second Thoracic Surgery Ward. The total number of thoracic surgery beds doubled. Under Professor Xu’s leadership, the Second Thoracic Surgery Ward adopted "Virtue Carries Medicine; Unity and Innovation" as its departmental motto, and everywhere embodies the noble professional spirit that "physicians should have the heart of loving parents." By educating people and benefiting others through profound virtue, continuously refining medical skills and pursuing excellence, upholding a scientific attitude and scientific spirit, we work solidly and down-to-earth to relieve patients of their suffering. By remaining united, continuously pursuing progress, and developing and innovating, we demonstrate the hardworking, vigorous, and upward-spirited character of all members of the Department of Thoracic Surgery of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University. The Second Thoracic Surgery Ward currently has 40 beds and has an intensive care unit with 6 monitored beds; each bed is equipped with 1 multifunctional monitor. The department is equipped with advanced thoracoscopic surgical equipment, complete emergency and resuscitation facilities, and various types of micro-infusion pumps. High-quality equipment ensures continuous improvement in the quality of medical care. The Second Thoracic Surgery Ward has 20 medical staff members: 5 physicians and 15 nurses, including 2 professors, 2 associate professors, and 1 lecturer. Our department treats diseases involving pulmonary, esophageal, and mediastinal surgery, and undertakes emergency treatment and resuscitation of patients with thoracic trauma; the successful rescue rate for critically ill patients reaches 98%.Successfully performed tracheal tumor resection; sleeve reconstruction of the bronchi and pulmonary vessels, and carina reconstruction; radical resection of middle- and upper-segment esophageal cancer; repair of chest wall defects with artificial materials after chest wall tumor resection; correction of chest wall deformities and other highly difficult surgeries. Thoracoscopic surgery has become a major specialty of the department. We took the lead in introducing this technology in the province in the early 1990s and successfully performed totally endoscopic lung cancer and esophageal cancer resections and other surgeries. It has the advantages of less trauma and faster recovery. The number and difficulty of thoracoscopic surgeries are both at an advanced level in China. Service tenet: put oneself in the patient’s place, put patients at the center, and consider patients’ needs; taking “Let patients come to seek medical care with hope and return home with a smile” as the service philosophy and putting oneself in the patient’s place as the service approach, we integrate humanistic service throughout the entire process of medical activities and establish a good image of departmental service. All medical practices take meeting patients’ needs as their starting point, improving medical quality and providing high-quality service as their foundation, and achieving patient satisfaction as their goal, transforming a single medical quality service into humanistic service that comprehensively focuses on patients’ quality of life, quality of daily living, and quality of survival. Service culture philosophy: first-class service, first-class quality Service culture awareness: respect patients, care for patients In 2017, the Second Thoracic Surgery Ward published 2 sci papers and 1 paper in a Chinese core journal, and worked hard to develop new medical technologies, such as minimally invasive treatment of achalasia of the cardia via transabdominal laparoscopy and subxiphoid resection of mediastinal tumors. With the strong support of the hospital leadership, the department introduced an ultra-high-definition storze thoracoscope. In conjunction with the eras concept, this reduces patients’ postoperative pain and comprehensively promotes minimally invasive treatment. According to preliminary estimates, the actual rate of minimally invasive surgery among patients with indications for minimally invasive surgery exceeds 80%.
