Radiology Department
The Department of Radiology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University is a key medical-technical department integrating medical care, teaching, and research. It has now developed into a modern medical imaging discipline with advanced imaging equipment, comprehensive medical technology, a well-structured talent pipeline, a strong faculty, and coordinated development of medical care, education, and research. It has 6 divisions: Outpatient Radiology, Radiology in the Surgical Building, Radiology Department II, Radiology of the Health Examination Center, Operating Room Radiology, and Dental Radiology; and three professional groups: radiological diagnosis, radiological technology, and radiology nursing.
It possesses advanced modern imaging examination equipment, including DR 8 units, 2 fully digital gastrointestinal contrast imaging units, 1 fully digital mammography unit, 1 fully digital 3D breast tomosynthesis unit, 4 C-arm units, 2 mobile DR units, 1 digital dental radiography unit, 1 digital panoramic dental tomography unit, and 1 dental CBCT unit, and is at a leading level nationally in terms of overall strength. The discipline has established a PACS system; imaging data can be transmitted over a network and used for remote consultation. It is fully responsible for the imaging diagnosis and treatment of the hospital’s emergency and inpatient patients; the Department of Radiology is the founding department of the Second Hospital’s Department of Radiotherapy and Department of Isotopes. The Department of Radiology currently has 35 medical personnel, including doctors, nurses, and technologists, among whom are 3 holders of doctoral degrees, 7 holders of master’s degrees, 1 engineer, and 15 technologists with bachelor’s degrees or higher; 2 master’s supervisors; 1 member of the Chinese Medical Association’s Society of Interventional Nursing, 1 executive committee member of the Heilongjiang Society of Imaging Technology, 1 member and 1 secretary of the Heilongjiang provincial committee of the Chinese Medical Association’s Society of Radiological Diagnosis; and 2 editorial board members and peer reviewers for domestic core professional journals.
The teaching and research section of the Department of Radiology has achieved outstanding results in teaching. It undertakes teaching in radiological diagnosis and nursing for multiple programs, including international students, the seven-year program, undergraduate clinical medicine, anesthesiology, the evening university program, and full-time junior-college-to-bachelor’s programs; it has placed particular emphasis on standardized residency training, strongly promoting the development of imaging education. Since 1986, the teaching and research section of the Department of Radiology has continuously improved the teaching environment and now has 2 demonstration classrooms, more than 2000 typical teaching films, and, in addition, more than 1000 various typical teaching images stored in the PACS system, available for multilevel teaching. Teachers actively participate in teaching reform, compile their own lecture notes based on the syllabus, and use a variety of advanced teaching methods, including multimedia, as well as CAI-assisted teaching methods, to meet the teaching needs of different levels, receiving widespread praise from students.
The department places great importance on strengthening the discipline’s talent structure, focusing on the training of mid-career and young technical backbones. In 1980, it began admitting master’s students and established the first radiology master’s training site in the province. It recruits talent, has established a talent-mobility mechanism, and has improved the continuing-education and training mechanisms for personnel at all levels. On the basis of studying imaging diagnostic technology, Director Zhang Shide has devoted himself even more to research in interventional radiology, achieving particularly distinctive results in angiography and interventional diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer. Some related research has reached an advanced level nationally, and he has carried out multiple new-technology and research-project studies, filling gaps within the province and promoting the development of interventional diagnosis and treatment of tumors in the province. Deputy Director Gao Bo has long been engaged in the diagnosis and research of breast cancer, has led several related provincial key research projects, developed multiple new medical technologies, and received awards from the Provincial Health Department. He has published many SCI-indexed papers and dozens of papers in national core journals. Associate Chief Physician Wang Xiulan has unique insights into the early diagnosis of breast diseases, especially breast cancer. In line with the department’s research directions, each physician establishes an area of professional expertise. Regarding the training of young physicians, the department has made an overall plan. The training principle is “high standards and strict requirements”; it focuses on cultivating their basic knowledge and fundamental skills, and strengthening their English proficiency and computer skills. The department emphasizes professional training for its technical personnel, ensures proficiency in operating DR and other digital equipment, and promotes improvement of the department’s overall medical level. It has comprehensively introduced dozens of new medical technologies, such as digital-guided needle-biopsy diagnosis of breast disease, imaging diagnosis of osteoporosis, and imaging evaluation of cardiac function, and has received provincial-, university-, and hospital-level medical new-technology awards more than 30 times. Making use of the department’s comprehensive strengths, it has collaborated with related departments on multiple research projects. Over the years, the discipline has undertaken and participated in multiple national- and provincial-level research projects, undertaken several provincial-department-level research projects, achieved a series of research results, and published more than 100 Chinese- and English-language research papers. It has strengthened academic exchange, hosted domestic academic conferences many times, and invited well-known experts from China and abroad to give lectures at the hospital, expanding the influence of the department both domestically and internationally.
The Department of Radiology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University is a comprehensive imaging center integrating medical care, teaching, and research. It has achieved gratifying results in its previous work, and we believe that, with the development of the times and advances in science and technology, the Department of Radiology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University will keep pace with the times and move toward an even better tomorrow! Our slogan is “Pursue excellence, serve clinical practice better, and serve patients wholeheartedly.”
