Orthopedic Surgery Ward 6
The Sixth Department of Bone Surgery is a flagship discipline with spine surgery as its main development direction. The department has 40 authorized beds and 21 medical staff. Among the 9 physicians, there are 2 doctoral supervisors and 4 master's supervisors; all 9 hold doctoral degrees in medicine, including 4 professors/chief physicians and 5 associate chief physicians. Among the 12 nurses, there is 1 chief nurse, 1 deputy chief nurse, 4 nurse-in-charge, 4 senior nurses and 2 nurses. The department is at the domestic leading level in the diagnosis and treatment of difficult orthopedic diseases, and is especially expert in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders.
On the basis of surgical treatment of common diseases such as spinal degenerative diseases, spinal tumors, spinal fractures and spinal infections, the department has carried out a large number of highly demanding operations, such as "total vertebrectomy with spinal reconstruction for spinal metastatic cancer", "scoliosis correction surgery", "kyphosis osteotomy correction", "resection of tumors inside and outside the high cervical spinal canal", "anterior and posterior approach surgery for atlantoaxial fracture-dislocation", "occipitocervical fusion and atlantoaxial fusion for atlantoaxial instability and deformity", "posterior cervical surgery for severe cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament", "360° thoracic spinal canal decompression for severe thoracic spinal stenosis", "cervical artificial disc replacement", and percutaneous endoscopic (foraminoscopic) treatment of lumbar disc herniation. In addition, Director Yan Jinglong pioneered in China the shortening osteotomy with internal fixation for tethered cord syndrome and the spinous process suspension-type laminoplasty through the posterior cervical approach for cervical spondylosis; the latter, featuring minimal damage to cervical structures and rapid postoperative recovery, has helped nearly one thousand cervical spondylosis patients recover. The department was also the first in Northeast China to perform high-difficulty operations such as lateral mass cannulated screw fixation for atlantoaxial dislocation and total vertebrectomy with spinal reconstruction for spinal malignancies.
The department takes spinal disease treatment and bone tissue engineering as its main research directions. It has presided over more than 20 national, provincial and departmental research projects and has won numerous national, provincial and ministerial-level awards, including 9 grants from the National Natural Science Foundation, 1 National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize, 5 Provincial Government Science and Technology Progress Second Prizes and 2 Provincial Government Science and Technology Progress Third Prizes. Its members have published more than 100 papers in core domestic and international journals, including more than 100 indexed by SCI, and have edited or co-edited many monographs. The department has repeatedly won the Heilongjiang Province New Health Technology Application Awards (First, Second and Third Prizes) and the Harbin Medical University Medical New Technology Achievement Awards (First and Second Prizes). It attaches great importance to academic exchange, frequently holding and participating in large domestic and international academic conferences, emphasizes cooperation with peer institutions within the province, has trained a large number of visiting physicians, and has long carried out large-scale free clinics and support work. It has successfully held many national and provincial training courses and seminars covering different specialty fields, inviting well-known experts from home and abroad for academic exchange, with a cumulative attendance of more than 5,000 participants. The department also undertakes multi-track teaching tasks for Harbin Medical University and has trained nearly 60 master's students and more than 20 doctoral students.
