Orthopedic Surgery Ward 2
The Second Orthopedic Surgery Ward (Joint and Minimally Invasive Surgery, Sports Medicine Surgery) of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University is the birthplace of orthopedics at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University. It was established in 1954, at the beginning of the hospital’s founding. The founders of the Second Orthopedic Surgery Ward were Professors Liu Zaisheng, Wang Zhicheng, and Dong Zhong, renowned Chinese orthopedic experts who made outstanding contributions to the development, expansion, and advancement of the ward. Professors Geng Shuoru, Shang Guoyou, Tao Tianzun, Yan Jinglong, and Tao Shuqing, who successively served as directors of the ward, all made major contributions to the development of the Second Orthopedic Surgery Ward and, indeed, to orthopedics at the Second Affiliated Hospital.
The Second Orthopedic Surgery Ward currently has an authorized capacity of 65 beds, with 14 doctors: 8 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, 1 attending physician, and 1 resident physician; 3 doctoral supervisors, 4 master’s supervisors, and 9 doctors with doctoral degrees. The nursing team has 11 members, including 2 deputy chief nurses, 6 supervising nurses, and 3 nurses. The ward performs more than 200 operations per month, ranking among the leading departments of orthopedics at the Second Affiliated Hospital.
The current director of the Second Orthopedic Surgery Ward is Professor Pan Haile, a nationally renowned sports medicine expert and one of the first-generation experts involved in building academic organizations for ski-injury rescue doctors within China’s medical system. He formerly served as deputy head of the Upper-Limb Sports Trauma Group of the Fourth Sports Medicine Committee of the Chinese Medical Association. He was among the earliest experts in the province to perform arthroscopic surgery on the six major joints—the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle—and was among the first group of doctoral supervisors in sports medicine in Heilongjiang Province. He performs more than 1,000 arthroscopic operations annually. He currently serves as chair of the Sports Medicine Branch of the Heilongjiang Medical Association and has been editor-in-chief and chief translator of several major arthroscopy monographs, including “Fundamentals of Knee Arthroscopy” (People’s Medical Publishing House), “Fundamentals of Ankle Arthroscopy” (People’s Medical Publishing House), and “Diagnosis and Treatment of Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome.” The department’s two deputy directors, Professors Rong Jiesheng and Xu Liang, are both well-known provincial experts in the treatment of joint diseases. They have continued to innovate in joint replacement and possess extensive clinical experience and outstanding surgical skills. The other deputy director, Professor Yin Wenzhe, was one of the earliest experts at the Second Affiliated Hospital to perform arthroscopic surgery. The head nurse, Gu Qun, is a deputy chief nurse with extensive experience in professional nursing management.
In the history of the department’s development, Professor Tao Tianzun made major contributions. Professor Tao Tianzun is a leading figure in orthopedics in Heilongjiang Province and, particularly in osteoporosis research, is a nationally renowned expert. He established the Osteoporosis Professional Committees of Heilongjiang Province and the three northeastern provinces, as well as the Northern Osteoporosis Forum, and was the academic leader in osteoporosis prevention, treatment, and research in Northeast China. He participated in formulating eight national osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment guidelines and was a principal writing expert for three of them. He received several national awards, including the Kangchen Osteoporosis “Disciplinary Achievement Award” in pharmaceutical research from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Osteoporosis “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Chinese Gerontology Society, and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine. He served as editor-in-chief of numerous orthopedic monographs, including “Newly Compiled Clinical Orthopedics” and “Practical Orthopedics.”
During the department’s development, Professor Tao Shuqing successfully connected the achievements of the past with future development. His superb surgical skills made him famous throughout Longjiang and renowned nationally and provincially. Under Professor Tao Shuqing’s leadership, the Second Orthopedic Surgery Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University was among the earliest departments in the province to perform knee and hip replacements. It has demonstrated first-class national standards, particularly in complex hip and knee replacement, as well as the control and treatment of infection after joint replacement. In 2006, Professor Tao Shuqing was the first to use revision surgery with impaction bone grafting to treat loosening of a total hip prosthesis accompanied by severe bone loss. In 2008, he was the first to perform combined total hip and total knee replacement involving the entire femoral shaft and part of the upper tibia to treat multiple bone-metastatic tumors from renal cancer in one lower limb. He is a recognized authority in the field of joint replacement in Heilongjiang Province.
Under the training of Director Tao Shuqing, the department developed a wealth of talent and strong expertise in joint replacement. Professors Rong Jiesheng and Xu Liang, together with outstanding members of the new generation such as Professors Li Feng and Li Chao, have performed a large number of complex operations and expanded the department’s joint replacement techniques. The Second Orthopedic Surgery Ward was the earliest department in the orthopedics division of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University to perform shoulder, elbow, and ankle replacement.
In teaching, Professor Tao Tianzun was a senior teaching supervisor and distinguished educator at the Second Affiliated Hospital. Professor Pan Haile received a national teaching award. Professor Li Chao won the national championship in the Osteoporosis Fracture Case Competition of the Orthopedic Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, as well as second prize in the national final of the Osteoporosis Fracture Case Presentation Competition of the Osteoporosis Group of the Orthopedic Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Professor Yin Wenzhe received funding for three projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Teacher Lin Yuan is a senior clinical skills training instructor at our hospital. He represented our university in a competition in Russia, winning first place in several individual events at the Far East Surgical Skills Competition, and has repeatedly led our undergraduate students to participate in the National Clinical Skills Competition for Medical Students, achieving excellent results.
Today, the Second Orthopedic Surgery Ward has successfully completed its generational transition. With an integration of senior, middle-aged, and young staff, the department has produced a succession of talented young and middle-aged core professionals and is showing vigorous vitality and strong upward momentum. The department focuses on the treatment of joint diseases, with sports medicine arthroscopy and joint replacement as its key technical approaches and distinctive directions for development. It is forming a development pattern driven by two complementary engines—sports medicine arthroscopy and joint replacement—advancing side by side. In this way, it aims to reach the ideal of providing the most appropriate treatment for joint diseases and to develop as a department with prominent strengths and distinctive characteristics. Under the leadership of the new departmental team—Pan Haile, Yin Wenzhe, Rong Jiesheng, Xu Liang, and Gu Qun—the department is presenting a new image, continually striving to climb toward new peaks, write new chapters, and open up new horizons.
