Interventional Radiology Department
Interventional radiology is the general term for medical procedures that, under the monitoring and guidance of medical imaging equipment, use relatively small traumatic approaches to achieve diagnostic or therapeutic goals. It is an emerging discipline integrating medical imaging and clinical treatment that developed rapidly in the early 1980s. At the China Symposium on Strategic Issues in Interventional Medicine, jointly convened in November 1996 by the State Commission of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health, and the State Pharmaceutical Administration, interventional treatment was formally designated as the third major therapeutic discipline, alongside internal medicine and surgery, and was called Interventional Medicine (Interventional Medicine).
The Interventional Department of the Second Hospital of Harbin Medical University introduced advanced foreign technology in the early 1980s and was the first in the province to carry out interventional treatment of tumors. In the early 1990s, it established the province’s first specialized interventional outpatient clinic and ward. It has an independent clinical nursing unit and provides integrated medical nursing. It has a strong clinical research team and has recently introduced the most advanced foreign interventional equipment, including a digital subtraction angiography system (DSA), a radiofrequency ablation machine, and an ultrasound machine. It cooperates with many domestic research institutions to comprehensively carry out interventional radiology treatment. Integrating medical care, teaching, and research, it pioneered a standardized model of interventional treatment in China. It treats more than 1,800 patient visits annually, achieves satisfactory clinical results, and has extensive clinical experience from more than 10,000 cases.
At present, it mainly carries out arterial chemoembolization for primary liver cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, metastases, and other diseases; radiofrequency ablation for primary liver cancer; biliary drainage and stent placement for biliary obstructive diseases; balloon dilation and stent placement for benign and malignant esophageal strictures; balloon dilation and stent placement for renal artery stenosis; embolization for vascular malformations; emergency arterial embolization for massive hemorrhage in obstetrics and gynecology, massive hemoptysis, and gastrointestinal bleeding; interventional diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant gynecological tumors; emergency embolization and hemostatic treatment for postoperative and traumatic bleeding; interventional treatment of ischemic necrosis of the femoral head; interventional embolization treatment for hypersplenism; and puncture drainage of cysts and abscesses of the liver, kidneys, spleen, and other organs.
