Nephrology

The Department of Nephrology is an advanced department integrating clinical care, teaching, and research, and enjoys a high reputation within the province. It has a highly qualified medical and nursing team, keeps abreast of academic developments and advanced technologies in China and abroad, and undertakes teaching, internships, and training for graduate and undergraduate students of Harbin Medical University and physicians from within the province undertaking further training.

At present, the Department of Nephrology has 40 beds in operation and a total of 26 medical and nursing staff members. These include 1 chief physician, 5 deputy chief physicians, 7 attending physicians, and 2 resident physicians (5 staff members hold doctoral degrees, 5 hold master’s degrees, and 1 supervises master’s students), as well as 1 deputy chief nurse, 2 nurse supervisors, 7 nurse practitioners, and 1 nurse.

It specializes in integrated treatment with traditional Chinese and Western medicine for diabetic nephropathy, benign arteriolar nephrosclerosis, lupus nephropathy, urinary tract infections, isolated hematuria and proteinuria, nephrotic syndrome, and refractory edema of renal origin, effectively delaying the time at which patients enter dialysis. It is highly proficient in pathological diagnosis using renal biopsy techniques and in screening red blood cells in urinary sediment to determine their source. It performs peritoneal dialysis, effectively preserving the residual renal function of patients with uremia. Within the province, it performs internal jugular vein catheterization, arteriovenous fistuloplasty, arteriovenous fistula repair, and other procedures, establishing a vital vascular access route for hemodialysis patients; these are advanced technologies in the province.

The department’s staff have long been dedicated to research on chronic glomerulonephritis and have achieved encouraging results concerning the effects of point mutations in genetic factors on the pathology and prognosis of IgA nephropathy.
