The department’s southern and northern campus sites have a combined area of 7,400 square meters and are rationally divided into functional zones. The laboratory has multiple high-quality, fully automated lines for biochemistry, immunology, and clinical laboratory testing; it took the lead in the province in carrying out mass spectrometry testing and has an HIV confirmatory laboratory and a clinical gene-amplification laboratory. While fully meeting clinical service needs, the department has undertaken multiple research-funding projects, including 6 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China under its leadership and more than 20 provincial-level projects. In the past 5 years, it has published more than 100 academic papers, including more than 60 indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI).
Since its establishment, the department has continuously participated in interlaboratory external quality assessment activities organized by the National Health Commission Clinical Laboratory Center and the Heilongjiang Provincial Health Commission Clinical Laboratory Center, achieving excellent results. In 2014, the department became one of the first laboratories in the province to obtain ISO 15189 accreditation. It is a teaching base for the laboratory medicine program of the Fourth Clinical Medical College of Harbin Medical University; in particular, its small-class teaching model has become a benchmark for laboratory medicine education.
The Department of Laboratory Medicine has always attached great importance to education and public outreach in medical science popularization. In accordance with the requirements of the “Outline of the Action Plan for Enhancing Scientific Literacy among All Citizens (2021–2035),” it actively responds to the call of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. To safeguard the health of the people of Heilongjiang, it regularly organizes science-popularization activities and conducts multiple sessions of the “Entering Medicine” series of science-popularization mini-classes. The department is a Heilongjiang Provincial Science Popularization Base and a Heilongjiang Provincial Biosafety Training Base.
In 2022, the department established the WeChat official account “Department of Laboratory Medicine of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University.” It regularly posts the department’s clinical, teaching, and research news, news from its Party branch, and works related to science popularization. It hopes to introduce laboratory knowledge to the public so that the public can acquire basic knowledge of disease prevention and general knowledge related to laboratory examinations and tests. Through concrete actions, it puts into practice the call of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China concerning science-popularization work.
For many years, the department has accepted laboratory physicians from primary-level institutions free of charge for further study and training in our department.
