Orthopedic Ward 4 primarily specializes in orthopedic trauma, with limb traumatic fractures and soft-tissue injuries as its clinical focus and research directions. Using internationally advanced AO theories and instruments, the ward has treated a large number of pelvic and limb fracture cases, accumulated extensive clinical experience, and greatly promoted patients’ early recovery of limb function and improvement in quality of life. In recent years, the following diagnostic and treatment procedures have been successfully carried out: minimally invasive surgical treatment of limb fractures; reduction and internal fixation of pelvic and acetabular fractures; closed reduction and PFNA internal fixation for intertrochanteric femoral fractures in elderly patients; closed reduction and internal fixation as well as joint replacement for femoral neck fractures; repair of skin and soft-tissue defects; replantation of severed limbs; microsurgical repair and functional reconstruction of vascular and nerve injuries of the limbs; and treatment of brachial plexus injuries. Several experts in the ward serve as committee members or hold other positions in organizations including the Trauma Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Orthopedic Professional Committee of the Heilongjiang Medical Association, the Trauma Branch of the Heilongjiang Medical Association, and the Heilongjiang Professional Committee of Hand Surgery. They have considerable academic influence in the field of orthopedics.
With clinical practice as its foundation, the department places great importance on research. It has applied for nearly 10 projects from the Natural Science Foundation of Heilongjiang Province, the Harbin Municipal Science and Technology Commission, the Health and Family Planning Commission, and the postdoctoral research program of Heilongjiang Province, with total funding exceeding RMB 200,000. The department has published more than 20 articles indexed by SCI and in core journals.
The department currently has nearly 10 master’s students enrolled or graduated, and undertakes extensive teaching responsibilities for undergraduate students in clinical medicine and forensic medicine. In 2010, the Heilongjiang Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission designated Orthopedic Ward 4 of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University as the “Heilongjiang Provincial Trauma Orthopedics Treatment Center.”
