Songbei – Ophthalmology Department
The Department of Ophthalmology of the Songbei Campus of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University is a young department with a team of highly qualified and highly skilled medical and nursing staff. It shoulders major responsibilities such as restoring sight to patients with cataracts in Songbei District and preventing and controlling myopia among adolescents, while also undertaking ophthalmic research, teaching, prevention, and healthcare in Songbei District.
The department’s most distinctive diagnostic and treatment service is the surgical treatment of various types of cataract. The department head, Director Jiang Shixian, has extensive surgical experience, with nearly 30,000 procedures performed. At the department’s establishment, it introduced the latest-generation phacoemulsification machine from Bausch + Lomb, USA, and a high-end microscope from Möller, Germany. Supported by sophisticated techniques and advanced equipment, the department has established a day-surgery ward in this hospital. Admission, surgery, and discharge take only eight hours, providing excellent postoperative outcomes while greatly reducing the length of hospitalization and easing patients’ financial burden. The outpatient department also performs surgery for various eyelid diseases, pterygium excision combined with autologous stem-cell transplantation, and surgery for various ocular injuries.
Another major distinctive diagnostic and treatment service of the department is myopia prevention and control in adolescents. It has several experienced National Level I optometrists and a complete set of optometric examination and fitting equipment, with extensive experience in orthokeratology lens fitting, functional eyeglass fitting, visual function training, and related services. Combining the department’s two major strengths—exquisite intraocular surgical techniques and precise refractive-power fitting—the department is focusing on performing a new generation of refractive surgery, including phakic intraocular lens implantation (ICL), to provide a new treatment option for patients with high myopia.
The Department of Ophthalmology is pursuing a strategy of first-class technology, first-class service, first-class equipment, and development from a high starting point at a high level. It continuously recruits talent, expands its medical team, and actively and comprehensively carries out ophthalmic clinical care, teaching, and research.
