Distinctive traditional Chinese-medicine treatments:
1. Acupoint application: Based on the Chinese-medicine theory of treating disease before it occurs, the department encourages patients with lung-system diseases to make health preservation their top priority. Acupoint application integrates meridians, acupoints, medicines and magnetic therapy. It developed from the Sanjiu and Sanfu plaster treatment for treating winter diseases in summer. Following the Shu-Mu combination and near-and-distant acupoint principles, it selects back-shu, front-mu, airway and paranasal acupoints of the Lung Meridian, such as Feishu, Zhongfu, Tiantu, Dazhui and Yingxiang. Medicines and magnetic particles act directly on selected body-surface points, travel through the meridians to the organs and connect the exterior and interior. It is suitable for chronic bronchitis, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, cor pulmonale, upper respiratory tract infection, interstitial pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, pharyngitis, rhinitis and other lung-system diseases. Herbal acupoint plasters may be used in both summer and winter. During an acute attack, they may be combined with medication for the acute attack. The therapy relieves cough, transforms phlegm and calms wheezing through local acupoint effects, while meridian circulation regulates the body’s yin-yang and qi-blood balance, enhances immunity, prevents recurrence of respiratory disease and controls chronic disease progression. Combined with oral Chinese medicine, it has excellent effects.
2. Herbal paste prescriptions: For patients with chronic lung-system diseases such as bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, obstructive emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis and cor pulmonale, and with dysfunction of the heart, liver, spleen or kidneys caused by these diseases, the department prescribes individualized pastes. Tailored to each person and syndrome, they strongly nourish deficiencies of qi, blood, yin and yang and regulate organ qi and blood. Paste prescriptions, also called decocted paste or nourishing paste, are one of the ancient dosage forms (pills, powders, pastes and pellets). Oral pastes are repeatedly decocted from prepared herbs, concentrated after removing residue, and solidified with auxiliary ingredients such as donkey-hide gelatin and tortoise-shell gelatin; they can be taken long term. Compared with decoctions, they cover more diseases and signs, preserve medicinal properties better, last longer and are convenient. When prescribed according to syndrome differentiation, they relieve symptoms, improve quality of life and have clear advantages. They are not merely tonics or an accumulation of supplements, but an overall regulation of bodily function through individualized formula combination and special processing.
3. Herbal acupoint injection: Different medicines are injected into corresponding acupoints to treat respiratory diseases. Antispasmodic and antiasthmatic medicines can rapidly relieve wheezing and shortness of breath; lung-dispersing and cough-stopping medicines can rapidly relieve dry cough without sputum. For patients with long-term, recurrent chronic respiratory disease, qi-benefiting and pathogen-resisting medicines may be injected at acupoints to enhance immunity and strengthen healthy qi.
