Department of Pulmonary Diseases
2022.11
The Department of Pulmonary Diseases has outpatient clinics and wards at both the Main Hospital and the Hanan Branch of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine, enabling it to provide standardized medical services to patients at both sites. As a national clinical trial base for medicines, the department has participated in and led numerous large-scale clinical studies of medicines for respiratory diseases. The department is equipped with advanced and comprehensive medical equipment; its medical team has a well-structured training and staffing system and is highly skilled and proficient; its professional personnel are highly qualified and provide excellent services; its research directions are stable. The department treats various acute and chronic respiratory diseases, emphasizing treatment of both the symptoms and the underlying cause. In treating respiratory diseases, it highlights the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine, applying syndrome differentiation and individualized treatment according to the etiology and pathogenesis at different stages of the patient’s illness. Treatment plans are adjusted whenever the patient’s condition changes. During the acute stage, treatment focuses on eliminating pathogenic factors and rapidly relieving the patient’s suffering. During the remission stage, emphasis is placed on regulating the zang-fu organs; based on the interrelationships among the five zang organs and six fu organs, patients receive comprehensive constitutional regulation. The Department of Pulmonary Diseases currently has ventilators, pulmonary function testing instruments, blood gas analyzers, high-flow respiratory humidification devices, back percussion and sputum clearance machines, compressor nebulizers, moxibustion instruments, medium-frequency pulse therapy devices, electrocardiographs, cardiac monitors, and other equipment. These not only meet the needs of rescuing and treating critically ill patients, but also support the provision of traditional Chinese medicine therapies. The department has distinctive traditional Chinese medicine features and specializes in treatment methods such as acupoint application, herbal pastes, acupoint injection, acupuncture and moxibustion, Fire Dragon Cupping, press needles, catgut embedding, and traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation training.
The Department of Pulmonary Diseases currently has seven physicians, all of whom hold doctoral or master’s degrees; four are teachers in the Teaching and Research Section of Traditional Chinese Medicine Internal Medicine. The department emphasizes development of its professional staffing structure, organizes internal professional studies, participates in academic organizations at all levels and in academic conferences, and regularly selects outstanding medical and nursing personnel to study and receive training at well-known hospitals in China. These efforts improve the overall quality and diagnostic and treatment capabilities of medical and nursing personnel, maintain synchronization with advanced diagnostic and treatment standards in China and abroad, and further improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment of critical illnesses. The wards adopt human-centered management, with patients at the center. The department’s traditional Chinese medicine features are prominent, and it has earned an excellent reputation and achieved good clinical results.
All medical and nursing personnel of the Department of Pulmonary Diseases are committed to serving the many patients with respiratory diseases through the principles of quality first and service first, scientific management, advanced equipment, distinctive diagnosis and treatment, attentive nursing, affordable prices, and satisfactory therapeutic results!
Traditional Chinese medicine treatment methods:
1. Acupoint application therapy: Based on the traditional Chinese medicine theory of “treating disease before it occurs,” the Department of Pulmonary Diseases advocates that patients with pulmonary disorders regard health maintenance and disease prevention as their top priority. Acupoint application is a comprehensive treatment method integrating meridians, acupoints, medicines, and magnetic therapy. It was developed from the Sanjiu and Sanfu plaster therapies for “treating winter diseases in summer.” Based on the principles of selecting paired points according to back-shu and front-mu points and of combining distant and nearby points, it selects the back-shu points and front-mu points of the Lung Meridian, as well as acupoints along the airway and beside the nose—Feishu, Zhongfu, Tiantu, Dazhui, Yingxiang, and others. Medicines and magnetic particles are placed on specific acupoints, acting directly on the surface acupoints; through the meridians they reach the zang-fu organs internally, connect the limbs externally, link the exterior and interior, and run through the upper and lower body. This therapy is suitable for patients with pulmonary disorders such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, cor pulmonale, upper respiratory tract infection, interstitial pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, pharyngitis, and rhinitis. Herbal acupoint application may be performed in both summer and winter each year. In the event of an acute exacerbation, it is advisable to combine herbal acupoint application with medication for the acute episode. This therapy produces antitussive, phlegm-resolving, and antiasthmatic effects through the local therapeutic action of acupoints; at the same time, through the circulation of the meridians, it comprehensively regulates the body’s balance of yin, yang, qi, and blood, thereby enhancing immunity, preventing recurrence of respiratory diseases, and controlling the progression of chronic diseases. When combined with oral herbal medicine, it produces excellent therapeutic effects.
2. Herbal paste therapy: For patients with chronic pulmonary disorders such as bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, obstructive pulmonary emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis, and cor pulmonale, as well as those with cardiac, hepatic, splenic, or renal dysfunction caused by these conditions, the Department of Pulmonary Diseases prescribes herbal pastes tailored to each individual, customized to the patient, and selected according to the syndrome. These pastes have strong effects in replenishing deficiencies of the body’s qi, blood, yin, and yang and regulating the qi and blood of the zang-fu organs. An herbal paste, also called a concentrated decoction paste or nourishing paste, is one of the ancient pharmaceutical forms, alongside pills, powders, pastes, and elixirs. An oral paste is prepared by repeatedly decocting sliced herbs, removing the dregs and concentrating the decoction, then adding auxiliary ingredients such as donkey-hide gelatin and tortoise-shell gelatin according to the patient’s condition to form the paste, which may be taken for a prolonged period. Compared with decoctions, it covers a broader range of diseases and clinical manifestations, better preserves the properties of the medicines, has a longer storage life, and is convenient to take. Prescribing herbal pastes according to syndrome differentiation can improve uncomfortable symptoms, enhance quality of life, and provide clear therapeutic effects and considerable advantages. In fact, herbal pastes are not merely tonics, nor are they simply an accumulation of restorative medicines; they constitute comprehensive regulation of bodily functions and involve individualized formulation and specialized processing of medicines.
3. Herbal acupoint injection therapy: A treatment method for respiratory diseases in which different medicines are selected and injected into corresponding acupoints. For example, medicines that relieve bronchospasm and wheezing can rapidly alleviate wheezing and shortness of breath, while medicines that diffuse the Lung and relieve cough can rapidly relieve dry cough without sputum. In addition, for patients with chronic respiratory diseases characterized by prolonged and recurrent attacks, qi-benefiting and healthy-qi-supporting medicines may be administered by acupoint injection to enhance the body’s immunity and support healthy qi and strengthen the body’s constitution.
