Pathology
Pathology is the foundation of medicine, and the Department of Pathology is an important supporting department closely related to the quality of medical care in the hospital. The Department of Pathology currently has 14 staff members, including 1 chief physician, 7 staff members with master’s degrees, 1 person undergoing training under the Zhejiang Province 151 Talent Project, and 1 Hangzhou Class D talent. It processes nearly 30,000 routine biopsy tissue cases and nearly 10,000 cytology diagnostic cases annually. The services provided include: routine histopathological diagnosis; rapid intraoperative frozen-section pathological diagnosis; rapid paraffin pathological diagnosis; microwave vacuum tissue processing and automated staining technology; pathological examination and diagnosis of various puncture tissue specimens; liquid-based cytology technology and diagnosis; cell-imprint technology and diagnosis; cytological diagnosis of puncture specimens from superficial masses; special staining technology; immunohistochemical staining technology and companion diagnostics; fluorescent acid-fast staining technology; fluorescent staining detection of vaginal secretions; in situ hybridization technology; fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technology and molecular pathological testing technologies such as PCR; and consultation on difficult pathological cases from within and outside the city.
Advanced instruments and equipment: height-adjustable multifunctional grossing station, gross specimen imaging system, enclosed fully automated tissue processor, embedding station, paraffin microtome, constant-temperature cryostat, fully automated stainer, coverslipper, embedding cassette and glass slide labeling machine, electric constant-temperature incubator, automated immunohistochemistry stainer, fully automated sedimentation-based liquid-based thin-layer cytology processor, in situ hybridization instrument, multi-viewing microscope, fluorescence microscope, automated slide scanner, full-process pathology operation management system, telepathology diagnostic system, medical multifunctional image analysis system, and more.
Main research directions: 1. Pathological diagnosis of pulmonary infectious diseases and spatial multi-omics research on tuberculous granulomas. 2. Pathological diagnosis of diseases of the respiratory system, digestive system, and obstetrics and gynecology. 3. Pathological diagnosis of specialized puncture specimens from the kidneys, breast, lung, bone marrow, lymph nodes, and other sites. 4. Pathological diagnosis of various specific and nonspecific infections, including tuberculosis, and research on their immune mechanisms. 5. Cytopathological diagnosis of cells obtained by fine-needle aspiration of the bone marrow, thyroid, breast, and lymph nodes, as well as exfoliated cells from pleural and peritoneal effusions, the cervix, and other sites. 6. Research on the application of artificial intelligence in pathological diagnosis.
The Department of Pathology has consistently strengthened quality and safety management, actively participated in interlaboratory quality assessment activities for pathology within and outside Zhejiang Province, and received multiple titles of outstanding unit for many consecutive years. In recent years, it has led and completed more than 10 research projects at various levels and published more than 40 academic papers, including 16 papers in SCI-indexed journals. It has led and completed one provincial public-welfare technology application research project; served as a lead participant in and completed one national-level project and one provincial/ministerial-level project, as well as one department/bureau-level project; led and completed one medical school-level project and one hospital-level project; and participated in obtaining one Third Prize for a provincial/ministerial-level scientific research achievement. It has participated in compiling three medical monographs, including Diagnostics of Leukemia and Diagnostics of Chronic Myeloid Tumors, which were published and distributed by the People's Medical Publishing House. The Training Dataset for the Auxiliary Review Model of AI Diagnostic Reports for Tuberculosis at Hangzhou Red Cross Hospital has obtained a data-ownership registration certificate.
