Otolaryngology
The Department of Otolaryngology was established in 1982. Outpatient services, emergency services, and inpatient wards are open year-round. The Department of Otolaryngology currently has 18 staff members, including 11 physicians, 1 audiologist, and 3 technicians. There are 22 approved beds, with more than 30 actually in use. Over the past 40 years, along with the development of the hospital, the department has grown from nothing to something, and from weak to strong. Through the efforts of several generations, the department now has a well-developed and rational professional team, with strong research and clinical technical capabilities. The department provides all diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical services in the field of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery. In 1979, it was among the first in the province to establish a specialized allergy outpatient clinic and to conduct formal diagnosis of allergic rhinitis. In 2000, it was among the first in the province to carry out year-round monitoring and comprehensive treatment of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) across all age groups, and has accumulated extensive experience in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of snoring disorders in adults and children. Functional sinus surgery was initiated in 1997. The department has distinctive expertise in sinusitis surgery, the diagnosis and treatment of voice disorders, tympanoplasty and hearing reconstruction, and the diagnosis and surgical treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the pharynx and larynx. Its integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment for deafness and tinnitus has earned a good reputation among patients. The department routinely performs functional endoscopic sinus surgery (including nasal polyp surgery, sinusitis surgery, correction of deviated nasal septum, adenoidectomy, excision of sinus cysts, excision of benign nasal tumors, excision of inverted papilloma of the nasal cavity, etc.), vidian neurectomy for allergic rhinitis, laryngeal microsurgery under laryngoscopy (for vocal cord polyps, vocal cord cysts, vocal cord nodules, vocal cord leukoplakia, laryngeal cancer, epiglottic cysts, etc.), radical laryngectomy for laryngeal cancer, tympanoplasty, radical mastoidectomy, artificial stapes implantation, esophagoscopy with foreign-body removal, tonsillectomy, and other procedures. The department is currently a standardized residency training base for otolaryngology in Zhejiang Province. While completing its clinical work, it also undertakes teaching and the training of visiting physicians. In recent years, the department has undertaken 3 projects funded by Zhejiang Province and Hangzhou Municipality and has published more than 20 SCI-indexed and high-quality papers. One project received the Third Prize for Health Science and Technology Innovation of Zhejiang Province, and one Excellent Scientific and Technological Paper Award was received from each of the provincial and municipal levels. The department is equipped with various advanced imported surgical devices for rhinology, otology, and laryngology, including internationally renowned WOLF, STORZ, and STRYKER nasal endoscopes and high-definition endoscopic surgical video systems, an Olympus electronic nasopharyngolaryngoscope, and an American Medtronic surgical power system, enabling minimally invasive functional nasal surgery. Leica and German Carl Zeiss microscopes, Swiss Bien-Air and German Bing high-speed micro drills, and complete sets of American and German laryngeal and otologic microsurgical instruments and equipment ensure the smooth performance of otologic and laryngeal (vocal cord) microsurgery. The American Smith & Nephew low-temperature plasma radiofrequency surgical system can be used for minimally invasive volume-reduction surgery of the nasal turbinates, tonsils, and adenoids, as well as minimally invasive uvulopalatopharyngoplasty for sleep-disordered breathing. A nasal function monitor and a nasal nitric oxide analyzer provide precise diagnosis of nasal function. An American Philips Respironics multichannel polysomnography system is used to detect snoring disorders. The audiology department is equipped with a complete set of Madison equipment from Denmark, including the 901 pure-tone audiometer, 922 acoustic impedance meter, otoacoustic emission equipment, auditory brainstem evoked-potential equipment, electronystagmography equipment, tinnitus monitor, and comprehensive tinnitus diagnostic and treatment instrument. The Japanese OLINPS digital electronic laryngoscope is used for the diagnosis and treatment of inflammation and tumors of the nose, pharynx, and larynx. All outpatient consulting rooms are equipped with endoscopic video systems. Department research directions: 1. Integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment of tinnitus and deafness; 2. Comprehensive treatment of allergic rhinitis; 3. Surgical treatment of chronic rhinitis–rhinosinusitis; 4. Diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of snoring disorders in children and adults; 5. Tympanoplasty of the external and middle ear; 6.
