Orthopaedics
The Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of Hangzhou Red Cross Hospital was established in 1976. After nearly 50 years of disciplinary development, it has gradually evolved into an integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine orthopedic and traumatology discipline incorporating medical care, teaching, scientific research, and emergency rescue, with distinctive disciplinary characteristics (diagnosis and treatment of bone tuberculosis/infections) and comprehensive subspecialties (spine surgery, orthopedic trauma, and joint and sports medicine surgery). The department currently serves as the institution of the incoming chair of the Bone Tuberculosis Subspecialty Branch of the Chinese Antituberculosis Association; the institution of the chair of the Bone Tuberculosis Professional Committee of the Zhejiang Antituberculosis Association; the institution of the chair of the Zhejiang UBE Alliance of the International UBE Association; the institution of the chair of the Hangzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Orthopedic and Traumatology Quality Control Center; and the institution of the vice chair of the Orthopedic Specialty Committee of the Hangzhou Medical Association. It is also a key specialty development unit under the 13th Five-Year Plan of the Zhejiang Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a key medical discipline under development in Hangzhou, and the leading institution of the Hangzhou Alliance for Specialized Diagnosis and Treatment of Bone and Joint Infections (Tuberculosis) Integrating Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine; it is the Hangzhou Bone and Joint Infection Diagnosis and Treatment Center; its Bone and Joint Infection Specialty has been included in the Hangzhou Clinical Key Specialty Development Project; it has established the Zhejiang Provincial Research Laboratory for Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Orthopedics and Traumatology; it has been awarded the national title of “Trauma Center”; and its nursing team received the title of the 2nd National Advanced Collective in Traditional Chinese Medicine Nursing. The department has 230 open beds, five wards, and an annual outpatient volume of more than 200,000 visits. It has 127 medical and nursing staff members, including 32 staff members with senior professional titles (16 chief physicians, 11 associate chief physicians, 1 chief nurse, and 4 associate chief nurses), 4 master’s supervisors, 1 postdoctoral fellow, 4 doctoral degree holders, and 30 master’s degree holders. The Orthopedics Department at the Fengqi Campus specializes primarily in the diagnosis and treatment of bone infections (tuberculosis), admitting more than 1,300 patients with bone infections (tuberculosis) annually; the Qiantang Campus specializes primarily in bone and joint trauma. The department has innovatively improved a series of anterior and posterior surgical approaches, surgical techniques, and internal fixation methods for spinal infections (tuberculosis), substantially reducing surgical trauma. It was among the earliest to perform minimally invasive procedures such as transforaminal endoscopic surgery, UBE surgery, and percutaneous full-endoscopic posterolateral lumbar fusion (ZELIF). It has extensive clinical experience in primary and revision artificial joint replacement of the hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, and ankle, among others, and was a pioneer in performing artificial joint replacement for active joint tuberculosis. Sports medicine procedures, including hip arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, knee ligament reconstruction, and articular cartilage repair and reconstruction, have been performed for nearly 30 years. The department has strong capabilities in surgery for complex fractures of the joints, spine, pelvis, and other sites, as well as microsurgical techniques such as replantation of severed limbs and digits. Traditional Chinese medicine has demonstrated significant therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of orthopedic and traumatological diseases. The monographs Surgery of Spinal Tuberculosis and Diagnosis and Treatment of Spinal Infections, among others, edited by Professor Shi Shiyuan and his team have won widespread recognition from experts and scholars in the field of spinal infections.
