Cardiothoracic Surgery
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Department has 23 practicing physicians: 7 chief physicians, 4 associate chief physicians, 5 attending physicians and 7 residents. It brings together highly educated staff, including 10 doctors and 11 masters. It has 41 beds and has performed nearly 20,000 thoracic operations, giving it major influence among comparable specialties in Hangzhou. It is the Hangzhou Lung Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Center, a China Thoracic Surgery ERAS demonstration subcenter and a Good Clinical Practice (GCP) base. It conducts clinical and basic research on lung, esophageal, mediastinal, chest-wall, tracheal, cardiac and great-vessel diseases, emphasizing professional, standardized, scientific, refined and human-centered development, with major progress and high-end breakthroughs in general thoracic and cardiac surgery.
The department has extensive experience in comprehensive management of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mediastinal and tracheal tumors, pneumothorax, hyperhidrosis and pectus excavatum. It has particular expertise in surgery for early lung cancer and ground-glass nodules, reaching advanced domestic standards. Staff hold important posts in Zhejiang medical, physician and anticancer associations, undertake more than 10 provincial/municipal projects, have won 8 provincial/municipal medical and government science awards, published over 80 high-quality papers (over 40 SCI-indexed) and co-edited 5 monographs.
It specializes in minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment and routinely performs thoracoscopic procedures, including single-port and 3D thoracoscopy. Single-port thoracoscopic and Da Vinci robot-assisted radical lung-cancer and esophageal-cancer surgery, precise segmentectomy for early lung cancer, mediastinal tumor resection (including thymoma), thoracic sympathetic-chain interruption for hyperhidrosis and NUSS repair of pectus excavatum are at advanced national and leading provincial levels.
Cardiovascular surgery has developed technical strengths in minimally invasive valve surgery, great-vessel disease, coronary bypass, congenital heart repair and comprehensive management of end-stage heart failure. With ongoing development, most key techniques are domestically advanced and provide high-quality regional care. The service is building a refined discipline based on minimally invasive cardiac surgery, coordinated with minimally invasive valve and coronary bypass surgery, great-vessel surgery, mechanical circulatory support and complex congenital heart surgery; its disease and age coverage is distinctive in Zhejiang. More than 100 difficult cardiac/great-vessel operations are completed yearly.
The department emphasizes external learning and exchange, sends doctors annually to renowned thoracic centers and attends professional conferences. It won third prize in the first national young thoracic surgeon competition, and multiple national/provincial surgical-video awards. Physicians have presented at the World Conference on Lung Cancer and the annual Asian Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery meeting, promoting rapid development.
