Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) was established in 1988 and is one of the important component departments of the Guangzhou Critical Pediatric Care Center, as well as one of the key cultivation platforms for the development of high-level hospitals in Guangzhou. It undertakes the major responsibility of monitoring and providing life support for critically ill children throughout the hospital, in Guangzhou, and even in the central and southern regions; it can treat critically ill children with all types of shock, insufficiency or failure of the functions of various organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, and the perioperative periods of various major surgical procedures, among others. PICU’s modern hardware instruments, equipment, and facilities, together with the advantages of various advanced technologies, provide a strong guarantee for the treatment of critically ill children; PICU has now established a training base for professional and advanced professional personnel in pediatric critical care—the postgraduate training base. In addition, it undertakes multiple international cooperation projects, scientific research projects approved at various levels, and various forms of medical education, making it a distinctive specialty with comprehensive development in medicine, education, and research. Specialty technologies: PICU’s multiple advanced software and hardware technologies support the development of its services, including: pediatric mechanical ventilation technology, pediatric severe shock and various critical illness rescue and monitoring technologies, perioperative monitoring technology for major surgeries, pediatric blood purification treatment technology, pediatric ECMO support technology, electronic bronchoscopy diagnosis and treatment technology for critically ill children, bedside cardiac function monitoring technology, bedside brain function monitoring technology, pediatric exchange transfusion therapy, nitric oxide treatment technology, etc. PICU involves multiple pediatric internal medicine, surgery, pharmacy, nutrition, rehabilitation, psychology, and other specialties, requiring joint diagnosis, treatment, and support by multiple specialties to provide comprehensive treatment for critically ill children.
