Pediatric Hematology
Pediatric Hematology The Hematology and Oncology Department of Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center is headquartered at the Zhujiang New Town Campus and is currently the pediatric hematology-oncology specialty in South China with the largest number of beds, the highest outpatient volume, the widest range of diseases, and the most complete functions. It mainly admits patients with all types of leukemia, aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, hemophagocytic syndrome, other refractory anemias and hemorrhagic diseases, and all types of solid tumors. It includes the Zhujiang New Town Campus and the Zengcheng Campus. The Zhujiang New Town Campus has 93 available beds, including 59 beds in the hematology-oncology ward, 8 transplant-unit beds (including 6 Class 100 laminar-flow units and 2 Class 1,000 laminar-flow units), and 36 day-ward beds. The Zengcheng Campus has 32 available beds. In the future, the Nansha Campus will have 140 available hematology beds, including 20 BMT beds. There are three specialty groups: hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, hematologic diseases (leukemia), and solid tumors; the department also has an independent hematology-oncology specialty laboratory. It has equipment such as laminar-flow beds and blood cell separators, and can carry out hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, chemotherapy, CAR-T therapy, peripheral blood stem cell collection, and other treatments. The specialty has strong medical and technical capabilities and currently has 3 chief physicians, 2 associate chief physicians, 5 attending physicians, 14 supervising nurses, and 23 nurses. The pediatric hematology specialty of Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center has developed a certain influence in Guangdong Province. It is among the first batch of nationally designated treatment wards for pediatric hematologic diseases and malignant-tumor collaboration groups, is the leading institution among Guangdong Province's designated treatment units for pediatric leukemia, and is a major member of the national CCCG-ALL-2015. It is currently one of the major pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation units in South China. The pediatric hematology specialty received the title of Guangzhou High-Level Key Cultivation Specialty in 2019 and undertakes the treatment of severe and high-risk pediatric leukemia, as well as the development and implementation of new technologies and projects. The current foundation of this specialty is mainly reflected in the following: ① Talent team: Director Jiang Hua is a member of the National Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Expert Alliance. At the same time, the specialty has a highly qualified and highly educated clinical team (doctoral degree holders: 37.9%; master's degree holders: 55.2%; with a reasonable age structure; 6 members have led National Natural Science Foundation projects, and 3 projects are currently underway); as well as a clinical diagnostic laboratory team and a clinical research team (leading 4 National Natural Science Foundation projects). ② Clinical resources: As a children's specialty hospital, the Municipal Women and Children's Medical Center has abundant clinical resources. Over the past 3 years, the Hematology and Oncology Department has diagnosed 400–450 cases of pediatric leukemia, approximately 400 cases of solid tumors, and approximately 350 cases of central nervous system tumors each year. These sufficient resources can better support the department's development and give medical staff greater motivation to provide the best treatment for these patients. ③ Technical support: Over the past 3 years, the pediatric hematology specialty has continuously innovated and developed new technologies and projects. This is reflected in its leadership in drafting hematopoietic stem cell transplantation guidelines for 4 pediatric hematologic diseases (haploidentical transplantation for severe aplastic anemia, cord blood transplantation for mucopolysaccharidosis, cord blood transplantation for X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, and cord blood transplantation for hyper-IgM syndrome) and in gene-modified therapy for X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy. In Guangdong, it has systematically implemented CAR-T treatment for refractory pediatric leukemia and was the first in China to apply CLL1-CAR-T to patients with transformed AML. These efforts have achieved gratifying clinical results and received widespread attention from peers and the media. ④ Research breakthrough: The department has the most comprehensive longitudinal hematologic-oncology biobank in China and the largest hematopoietic stem cell transplantation cohort in South China. The center newly diagnoses nearly 500 cases of various leukemias each year and has established collaborations with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in the United States, the Shanghai Institute of Hematology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and others. Since 2009, it has led 15 National Natural Science Foundation projects, including 7 General Program projects and 10 Young Scientists Fund projects. It has led 13 Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation projects and 9 Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology projects. From 2017 to the present, more than 100 SCI articles have been published annually, with a highest impact factor of 26.3. This year to date, 16 high-quality clinical and translational articles have already been published, 2 of which have an impact factor above 10: Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy and -Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
