Gynecologic Oncology Specialty
Gynecologic Oncology Department
Basic Overview The Gynecologic Oncology Department of the Women and Children’s Medical Center Affiliated with Guangzhou Medical University is a specialized medical team centered on standardized, integrated outpatient and inpatient diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic tumors, together with related research. The department has 8 chief physicians and 4 deputy chief physicians, including 3 doctoral supervisors and 7 master’s supervisors. It operates various specialized outpatient clinics for gynecologic tumors. The inpatient division comprises oncology wards, VIP wards, and chemotherapy wards distributed across three campuses: Zhujiang New Town Campus, Women and Infants Campus, and Zengcheng Campus, with a total of 86 beds.
Department Features The department specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic tumors and comprehensively performs radical surgery for cervical cancer, staging surgery for endometrial cancer, radical surgery for vulvar and vaginal cancer, and staging or cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer. For patients with advanced or recurrent tumors, it performs multidisciplinary combined surgery, including pelvic exenteration and secondary/multiple cytoreductive surgery. The department also makes full use of precision approaches such as chemotherapy and targeted therapy to provide standardized, effective systemic treatment for postoperative and recurrent patients, including treatment of high-risk gestational trophoblastic tumors and sensitivity-guided drug selection and treatment for recurrent ovarian cancer. It also provides genetic counseling related to ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and other gynecologic tumors. The Gynecologic Oncology Team of Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center is one of the few teams in China able to independently perform MDT resections of metastatic lesions throughout the body, including those in the liver, intestine, neck, and other sites. For advanced or recurrent ovarian cancer, its satisfactory cytoreduction rate is close to 90%, placing it at the international forefront; it can perform highly complex cervical cancer surgeries, including LEER surgery, thereby filling a gap in China and providing salvage treatment for patients with advanced recurrent tumors; it performs minimally invasive surgery for patients with malignant tumors using 3D laparoscopy, robotic surgery, single-port laparoscopy, and other techniques; it provides fertility-preserving treatment for patients with benign or malignant tumors during adolescence and pregnancy; and it provides noninvasive high-intensity focused ultrasound ablation (HIFU) for uterine fibroids and adenomyosis. In addition, the team has recently successively introduced a series of new technologies, including sentinel lymph node mapping for endometrial cancer, resection of complex retroperitoneal masses, intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion chemotherapy, interventional embolization of the hepatic artery, tumor immunotherapy, and targeted therapy, to serve women patients.
Teaching and Research The department has accumulated extensive experience in teaching and research and established a complete system integrating gynecologic oncology care, research, and education. In recent years, its members have undertaken numerous research projects at the national, provincial, and ministerial levels. Research areas include basic and clinical studies on the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, and gestational trophoblastic tumors. Related findings have been shared internationally, and many high-quality articles on gynecologic oncology have been published. The department also actively conducts clinical trials at various levels to explore and improve clinical efficacy and improve patient prognosis. Prospective clinical research includes minimally invasive surgery for cervical cancer and evaluation of the effectiveness of comprehensive treatment for advanced tumors; investigation of the feasibility of surgery for stage III and IV ovarian cancer and comprehensive treatment after multiple recurrences; and related studies on fertility preservation, molecular testing-assisted treatment, and other approaches for endometrial cancer. Each year, the department also undertakes gynecologic oncology teaching, including postgraduate education; trains doctoral and master’s students specializing in gynecologic oncology; actively conducts resident physician training; accepts physicians from across the country for advanced study and provides Level IV gynecologic endoscopy training; and organizes various national-level gynecologic oncology study courses each year.
