(I) Department Overview Guangzhou Medical University Affiliated Women and Children’s Medical Center Department of Pediatric Orthopedics was established in 1988. After more than 30 years of arduous efforts by several generations, our department has achieved remarkable accomplishments and undergone rapid development. At present, our department has a total of 54 beds across three hospitals and three campuses, performs an average of more than 4,000 operations annually, and receives 45,000 outpatient visits annually. The scope of diagnosis and treatment in our department covers all pediatric orthopedic diseases. We have developed a distinctive specialty focusing on the correction of congenital and acquired deformities in children (scoliosis, hip dislocation, clubfoot, femoral head necrosis (Perthes disease), cubitus varus and valgus, genu varum and valgum, lower-limb length discrepancy, polydactyly and syndactyly, and other limb deformities), with trauma and fractures, bone disease syndromes, tumors, infections, and others as its foundation. At present, our department has become the top-ranked pediatric orthopedic specialty in South China in terms of overall strength and a leading pediatric orthopedic specialty nationwide. (II) Technical Team Expert Team: Our department currently has 26 full-time orthopedic physicians, including 3 chief physicians, 3 deputy chief physicians, 6 attending physicians, and 1 gait analyst. Among them are 12 doctoral students, 8 master’s students, and 1 research-oriented postdoctoral fellow. Advanced Equipment: Our department established the first international-standard pediatric professional gait analysis laboratory in China. To date, more than 6,000 cases of complex lower-limb motion analysis have been conducted, providing an important clinical basis for guiding surgery for various lower-limb movement disorders. Its research on pediatric scoliosis won the EPOS Best Paper Award. Scientific Research: Our department has received 5 grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 project from the Guangdong Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission, 2 Guangdong Provincial Enterprise Joint Fund projects, and 3 Guangzhou municipal scientific research projects; published more than 50 SCI papers on basic and clinical pediatric orthopedics and more than 20 papers in Chinese core journals. We pioneered the treatment of developmental hip dislocation in children of different age groups using closed reduction and dynamic frog-leg plaster fixation, proposed the Wu classification of thumb polydactyly, and more, receiving a strong response both domestically and internationally. (III) Domestic and International Exchanges and Cooperation Our department took the lead in establishing the China Pediatric Orthopedics Multicenter Research Collaboration Group and has carried out multiple multicenter studies. Our department maintains long-term cooperation with Professor Federico Canavese of the University Hospital of Clermont-Ferrand, France, and Professor Antonio Andeacchio, the current president of the European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society (EPOS), conducting clinical and research cooperation in pediatric orthopedics. The Guangzhou-EPOS Pediatric Orthopedics Summit is held regularly. In 2017-2018, Professor Federico Canavese worked clinically in our department for more than 1 year, promoting the progress and development of pediatric orthopedics in both countries. Our department maintains good cooperation with the DuPont Children’s Hospital in the United States and others, and regularly sends resident physicians there for further training.
