Transfusion Medicine
The Department of Transfusion Medicine of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital was established in 2006, and its predecessor was the Blood Bank of the Clinical Laboratory Department of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital. It has now developed from a blood bank with a single function into a comprehensive business department integrating medical care, teaching, and research, and is currently a relatively large transfusion medicine specialty department with strong technical capabilities in Guangdong Province. The department has a total floor area of 428 square meters and contains a receiving room, a transfusion compatibility testing laboratory, a blood storage room, a blood issuing room, a blood component separation room, a transfusion treatment room, etc. It is equipped with high-end instruments and equipment, including the IH-1000 fully automatic blood grouping and crossmatching analyzer, COM.TEC blood cell separator, blood storage refrigerators, low-temperature refrigerators, blood cell counters, dedicated centrifuges for blood group serology, platelet agitators, biosafety cabinets, microscopes, etc., and is also equipped with a cold-chain temperature control system to ensure the safety of blood storage. The Department of Transfusion Medicine implements a 24-hour on-duty system and has established a green channel for the provision of blood for emergency and critical illness rescue, providing clinical blood and transfusion safety assurance for the entire hospital around the clock. The core task of the Department of Transfusion Medicine is to ensure clinical blood use and transfusion safety. It mainly undertakes the following routine work: reservation, receipt into storage, storage, and distribution of blood; transfusion-related immunological testing; establishment of a quality management system for clinical blood use; participation in the management of rational clinical blood use; participation in the investigation of adverse events involving clinical blood use; coordination of clinical blood use; participation in consultations on special transfusion treatment cases; promotion of blood conservation and new transfusion technologies such as autologous transfusion; and participation in technical work related to blood therapy.
Medical Features
The Department of Transfusion Medicine has strong technical capabilities. In addition to conducting routine transfusion compatibility testing items, it also conducts difficult blood group identification, irregular antibody screening, irregular antibody identification, difficult crossmatching, and other services, and has relatively high laboratory testing capabilities. The construction of the department’s clinical transfusion quality management system is at the forefront of the province. As an important department ensuring the safety of clinical blood use, the Department of Transfusion Medicine attaches great importance to the construction of the clinical transfusion quality management system. In accordance with the requirements of the Measures for the Administration of Clinical Blood Use, the Technical Specifications for Clinical Transfusion, and transfusion-related laws, regulations, and standards, it has established the most comprehensive clinical blood use quality management system in the province. With process management as its core, it has achieved standardized management of the entire clinical transfusion process and all its elements, and promoted the continuous improvement of the quality management system, thereby strongly ensuring clinical transfusion safety.
In addition to ensuring clinical blood use, the Department of Transfusion Medicine, as a public platform for the entire hospital, has carried out clinical transfusion treatment programs and helped solve numerous clinical treatment difficulties. Among these, the platelet-rich plasma (platelet-rich plasma,PRP) treatment technology that it has developed is widely used in multiple clinical departments, including the Reproductive Medicine Center, Department of Orthopedics, and Department of Plastic Surgery, and has achieved good results in the treatment of thin endometrium, endometrial adhesions, wound healing, arthritis, ligament injuries, muscle tendon injuries, facial rejuvenation, scar repair, etc. In addition, the Department of Transfusion Medicine actively promotes storage autologous transfusion technology, effectively solving the problem of tight blood supplies, preventing the condition from being affected by insufficient blood supplies, and ensuring the safety of clinical blood use.
Teaching and Training
The Department of Transfusion Medicine regularly organizes special training and assessments on clinical transfusion-related knowledge for medical and nursing personnel throughout the hospital and in all departments, and regularly organizes emergency drills with clinical departments for transfusion reactions, emergency massive blood use, and other situations. It undertakes the teaching and internship tasks for transfusion-related courses in medical laboratory programs from multiple institutions, including Southern Medical University, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangdong Medical University, and University of South China, as well as the supervision and instruction of trainees from medical institutions in China and within the province, cultivating transfusion medicine professionals for blood collection and supply institutions and medical institutions.
Research Achievements
In recent years, it has led and participated in multiple provincial and municipal scientific research funds. Among these, in 2023 it obtained approval for a project under the Guangzhou Science and Technology Program (Municipal-University-Institute Joint Fund), with a funding amount of 400,000 yuan; it has published multiple articles in SCI-indexed and Chinese core journals.
Talent Team
In recent recent years, the Department of Transfusion Medicine has increased its efforts in talent recruitment and development and has already formed an excellent talent team. It currently has 10 technical personnel, including 1 with a doctoral degree, 2 with master’s degrees, and 6 with bachelor’s degrees; 1 with a senior professional title at the highest level, 3 with deputy senior professional titles, 4 with intermediate professional titles, and 2 with junior professional titles.
