Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the Civil Aviation campus of Guangdong Second People’s Hospital is a comprehensive clinical specialty integrating medical care, teaching, and research. Relying on the hospital’s strong medical resources and following years of development, it has established a complete diagnosis and treatment system with distinctive specialty features. The department undertakes the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and health education of otorhinolaryngological diseases for the civil aviation system and surrounding areas. Its annual outpatient volume reaches tens of thousands of visits, and it has earned widespread recognition from patients and their families through accurate diagnosis and treatment and high-quality services. The department has always adhered to the philosophy of “patient-centered care,” continuously improving medical technology and service quality, and is committed to providing patients with an efficient, safe, and comfortable healthcare experience. I. Medical Features and Technologies. (I) Diagnosis and treatment of nasal diseases: minimally invasive precision with functional preservation. Technologies: The department performs endoscopic surgery for chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps, endoscopic correction of deviated nasal septum, and transnasal endoscopic resection of benign and malignant tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses; it also provides precise treatment for naso-ocular conditions such as endoscopic intranasal lacrimal drainage for chronic dacryocystitis. Technical advantages: Minimally invasive techniques result in less trauma and faster postoperative recovery, maximize preservation of the normal physiological functions of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, reduce postoperative complications, and improve patients’ quality of life after surgery. (II) Diagnosis and treatment of pharyngeal and laryngeal diseases: minimally invasive treatment to safeguard the voice. Treatment of common diseases: For vocal fold polyps, vocal fold nodules, and benign and malignant laryngeal tumors, the department uses minimally invasive resection under suspension laryngoscopy, removing lesions while preserving laryngeal phonatory function to the greatest extent. ▲Surgical image of vocal fold polyp. Individualized treatment of snoring: The condition of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (snoring) is clarified through polysomnography, followed by individualized treatments such as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and low-temperature plasma ablation to improve sleep quality and reduce the risk of related complications. (III) Diagnosis and treatment of ear diseases: comprehensive coverage with rehabilitation support. Scope of disease diagnosis and treatment: The department covers common ear diseases including otitis media, tympanic membrane perforation, deafness, and tinnitus, and performs otomicrosurgical procedures such as myringoplasty, radical mastoidectomy, and tympanoplasty, effectively eliminating ear lesions and restoring ear function. Hearing rehabilitation services: Professional hearing testing is provided, and hearing aids are precisely fitted according to the patient’s hearing loss, helping patients with hearing impairment improve their hearing and return to normal communication and daily life. The Department of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the Civil Aviation campus has completed multiple tympanoplasty procedures combined with ossicular chain reconstruction. (IV) New services and technologies: innovation-enabled improvement of outcomes. Low-temperature plasma ablation technology: Used in procedures such as tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, it causes little intraoperative bleeding, effectively alleviates postoperative pain, and shortens recovery time; it is particularly suitable for pediatric patients. ▲Low-temperature plasma ablation. (V) Head and neck tumors: The department has performed resection of retrosternal thyroid tumors, parotid tumors, and total laryngectomy. II. Advanced Examination Equipment. The department is equipped with a range of advanced examination methods and devices, providing a solid foundation for accurate diagnosis and efficient treatment: Mingxiang high-definition nasopharyngolaryngoscope system: Clearly displays subtle structures of the nasal cavity, pharynx, and larynx, helping physicians accurately identify lesions and establish diagnoses. ▲Nasopharyngolaryngoscopic examination. Japanese Olympus electronic laryngoscope: Enables in-depth observation of the larynx and provides clear imaging support for diagnosing vocal fold diseases, laryngeal tumors, and other conditions. Danish Ertingmei hearing-testing system: Precisely measures patients’ hearing levels and clarifies the type and severity of hearing loss, providing a basis for developing hearing rehabilitation plans. ▲Hearing examination. German ZEISS operating microscope: Provides a high-definition field of view for otomicrosurgery, minimally invasive laryngeal surgery, and other procedures, improving surgical precision and safety. Low-temperature plasma surgical system: Plays an important role in various operations, effectively reducing intraoperative bleeding and surgical trauma and enabling rapid recovery. III. Research Achievements. The department emphasizes the integration of clinical practice and scientific research and actively participates in research projects and academic exchanges at various levels. In recent years, team members have participated in multiple research projects of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology and the Health Commission, conducting studies on topics such as “optimization of outcomes of endoscopic nasal surgery” and “the pathogenesis and individualized treatment of snoring.” More than ten academic papers have been published in Chinese core journals, promoting the standardization and innovative development of clinical diagnosis and treatment technologies. The department also undertakes training for primary-care physicians, sharing diagnostic and treatment experience and technical achievements and contributing to the development of regional otorhinolaryngology. IV. Other Distinctive Features. As a key specialty of the Civil Aviation campus of Guangdong Second People’s Hospital, the department actively fulfills its public-service mission. It regularly conducts health education activities such as “Love Your Nose Day” and “Love Your Ears Day,” visiting communities and schools to disseminate knowledge about prevention of otorhinolaryngological diseases. Green medical-access channels are provided for special groups such as children and older adults, offering convenient medical services. In education, the department undertakes clinical internship supervision for medical colleges and has trained many primary-care medical professionals. With high-quality medical services and outstanding specialty capabilities, the department has repeatedly received honors such as “Department with High Patient Satisfaction” and “Demonstration Post for Quality Service,” and continues to contribute to protecting the ear, nose, and throat health of local residents and civil aviation personnel. ▲Surgery performed by Chief Physician Zheng Mingfen and the team. V. Staff. The department has a well-structured, highly skilled medical and nursing team. It currently has five medical and nursing personnel, including four physicians—one chief physician, an unspecified number of associate chief physicians, one attending physician, and one resident physician—and one nurse. Several members of the physician team hold master’s degrees or higher and have undertaken further training at renowned hospitals in China, with individual expertise in subspecialties including rhinology, laryngology, and otology. Team members maintain a rigorous and pragmatic work ethic, regularly attend academic conferences in China and abroad, keep abreast of developments at the forefront of the field, and apply advanced technologies and concepts in clinical practice to provide patients with professional and individualized diagnostic and treatment plans. The experienced nursing team emphasizes attentive care and humanistic support, providing comprehensive assistance during the perioperative and rehabilitation periods.
