Telephone: 020-89168084 Address: Building 3, 16th floor Department Introduction The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery is a Guangdong Provincial Clinical Key Specialty under the “12th Five-Year Plan” of Guangdong Province, with a well-developed talent echelon. The medical team currently includes 1 person receiving the State Council Special Government Allowance, 2 doctoral supervisors, 3 master’s supervisors, 4 chief physicians, 3 deputy chief physicians, 3 postdoctoral fellows, 4 members with doctoral degrees, and 9 members with master’s degrees. The department has published more than 100 papers in domestic and international core journals, including more than 50 SCI papers, completed 20 monographs and translated works, and written and formulated more than 30 domestic guidelines and consensus statements. The department focuses on basic research into gastrointestinal malignancies and artificial intelligence (AI)-guided surgery, and has undertaken and led to completion more than 50 research projects, including 6 National Natural Science Foundation projects, major science and technology projects of Guangzhou, Guangzhou clinical key construction projects, Guangzhou specialized high-tech projects, provincial natural science foundation projects, and others. The department has centered its development on minimally invasive surgery and is equipped with some of the leading minimally invasive equipment currently available in China, including a 3D+4K high-definition laparoscopic system, a fourth-generation da Vinci robotic system, a transanal single-port endoscopic system, and an AI real-time surgical navigation system: an intraoperative AI real-time vascular navigation system for gastric cancer and an intraoperative AI real-time autonomic nerve navigation system for rectal cancer. These systems meet the needs of all types of minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, particularly the surgical treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies. Under a surgical philosophy based on function preservation, precise surgery with preservation of the nerves throughout the procedure can be performed with the assistance of visualization-based surgery using these devices. Under the leadership of academic leader Professor Han Fanghai, our department’s team has been recognized as an outstanding gastrointestinal surgery team in China. With gastrointestinal malignancies as its main disease focus, it has developed in coordination with benign gastrointestinal surgical diseases. The department now performs various types of minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, including: laparoscopic/robot-assisted radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer (combined resection of the pancreatic body and tail), laparoscopic/robot-assisted radical resection for proximal gastric cancer with double-muscle-flap anastomosis, laparoscopic/robot-assisted pylorus-preserving radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer, laparoscopic/robot-assisted pancreaticoduodenectomy, laparoscopic/robot-assisted radical right hemicolectomy, laparoscopic/robot-assisted radical left hemicolectomy, endoscopic/robot-assisted radical resection of the transverse colon, laparoscopic/robot-assisted (ultralow) radical resection for rectal cancer, combined pelvic organ resection for rectal cancer, abdominal aortic lymph node dissection, lateral lymph node dissection, and other highly complex procedures. The department has extensive surgical experience with various recurrent and refractory colorectal cancers, the standardized treatment of colorectal cancer with liver metastases, remnant gastric cancer, and postoperative recurrence of gastric cancer. Among these, full-course nerve-preserving radical resection for rectal cancer, combined with TaTME to achieve sphincter preservation in low and ultralow rectal cancer, is a signature technique of the department and has previously received support from Guangzhou’s high-tech development program. The department aims to establish standardized, function-preserving surgical treatment for gastrointestinal malignancies. A multidisciplinary MDT team has been established covering clinical diagnosis, surgical treatment, and postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy, with the goal of creating a one-stop precision treatment center for gastrointestinal tumors. The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery has a specialized nursing team whose backbone consists of young and middle-aged staff. The nursing team currently includes 1 chief superintendent nurse, 6 supervisory nurses, 3 nurses, 8 staff nurses, 1 international ostomy therapist, and 1 senior surgical specialist nurse. It has extensive clinical nursing experience and serves as a practice base for senior surgical specialist nurses of the Guangdong Nursing Association. The department has established specialist nursing groups for wounds/ostomies, intravenous therapy (PICC/infusion ports), nutrition, and pain, providing patients with specialized and meticulous nursing throughout the entire course of care and committing itself to providing humanistic care and high-quality nursing services that offer comfort, peace of mind, warmth, and reassurance. Strong technical expertise, first-class equipment, advanced concepts, and compassionate, family-like service are the department’s strengths; teamwork, collaboration, and the courage to innovate are the traditions of Gastrointestinal Surgery and a tremendous driving force behind the department’s sustainable development.
