Telephone: 020-89168087 Address: 7th Floor, Building 3 Department Introduction The Institute of Chest Wall Surgery of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital was established in 2018 and consists of the Chest Wall Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery wards. It is a national standardized residency training base, with a reasonable staff complement and strong technical capabilities. It currently has 60 general inpatient beds and 10 intensive care unit beds. Chest Wall Surgery is a specialty specifically emphasized in the discipline development of the Institute. It is the first thoracic surgery subspecialty in China to be independently named and officially established, and is currently the largest diagnosis and treatment center for chest wall diseases in China. Its specialized technology is at the world-leading level. The department currently has 1 chief physician, 1 associate chief physician, 1 attending physician, and 3 resident physicians; among them, 1 has a postdoctoral qualification, 1 has a doctoral degree, and 4 have master’s degrees. Professor Wang Wenlin, the academic leader, is the founder of chest wall surgery in China. He took the lead in establishing the first independent chest wall surgery department in China, established the first Chest Wall Surgery Professional Committee in the domestic medical industry and served as its chairperson, founded the China Chest Wall Surgery Alliance and serves as its chairman, and also serves as the Director of the Institute of Chest Wall Surgery and Director of the Department of Chest Wall Surgery of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital. He is a chief physician and a master’s supervisor at Southern Medical University. Professor Wang Wenlin has engaged in basic research and clinical work on thoracic surgical diseases for nearly 30 years. He was the first to propose the concept of chest wall surgery in clinical practice, proposed the three laws of thoracic deformities, named special deformities such as pectus excavatum, saddle chest, and pigeon chest, systematically classified all thoracic deformities, and established a complete theoretical system of chest wall surgery, laying a solid foundation for chest wall surgery to become an independent discipline. He has previously completed more than 5,000 thoracic surgical procedures of various types, including a large number of complex and difficult chest wall surgeries. He was the first internationally to perform corrective surgery for asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy, straight back syndrome, and barrel chest. He has the world’s largest single-center series of asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy cases, and has completed the world’s oldest patient’s corrective surgery for pectus excavatum (59 years old), the oldest patient’s corrective surgery for pectus carinatum (56 years old), and the youngest patient’s minimally invasive corrective surgery for pectus excavatum (10 months old). He invented the Wang procedure for the treatment of pectus excavatum in young children (included in the National Clinical Edition 3.0 of Surgical Operation Codes), the Wenlin procedure for correcting various deformities, and proposed the concepts of "Band-Aid surgery," "bloodless surgery," "scarless surgery," "clean surgery," and "Tesla surgery." To promote the concepts and techniques of chest wall surgery, he has traveled throughout the country and successively assisted more than 300 hospitals in China in performing various chest wall surgeries. Due to his outstanding achievements, he has received awards including "Guangdong Province Labor Model," "Outstanding Management Cadre of Guangdong Province," and "Yangcheng Good Doctor." He has obtained 86 national patents and published more than 100 academic papers, including more than 10 SCI papers, and has led 3 provincial- and municipal-level research projects. The diseases treated by Chest Wall Surgery include various thoracic deformities, chest wall tumors, infections, defects, and trauma. Among them, corrective treatment of complex thoracic deformities, surgical treatment of chest wall tumors, and thoracic defect reconstruction techniques are all at the domestic leading level. In addition, chylothorax is also one of the department’s specialized diagnostic and treatment services. Associate Chief Physician Long Weiguang has engaged in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of chylothorax for more than 10 years and has unique and definitively effective treatments for chylothorax and complex pleural effusion. The previous success rate of minimally invasive conservative treatment for primary chylothorax in young children was as high as 95%, which is at the domestic leading level. Professor Wang Wenlin, founder of chest wall surgery in China, Chairman of the China Chest Wall Surgery Alliance, Chairperson of the Chest Wall Surgery Professional Committee of the Guangdong Society of Thoracic Diseases, Director of the Institute of Chest Wall Surgery of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital, postdoctoral fellow, chief physician, master’s supervisor. Common diseases treated by Chest Wall Surgery: (1) Thoracic deformities: various types of thoracic deformities, including pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum, flat chest, barrel chest, saddle chest, sulcus chest, pigeon chest, complex thoracic deformities, secondary (postoperative) thoracic deformities, asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy, straight back syndrome, Poland syndrome, etc.: (2) Chest wall tumors: various benign and malignant chest wall tumors requiring surgical resection, including lipoma, fibroma, osteochondroma, chondrosarcoma, aggressive fibromatosis, giant cell tumor of bone, osteosarcoma, solitary lymphoma of bone, etc.: (3) Thoracic trauma: various types of thoracic injuries, such as rib fractures, sternal fractures, pulmonary contusion and laceration, hemopneumothorax, etc.; (4) Chest wall infections: chronic infectious sinus tracts, osteomyelitis, etc., caused by acute and chronic infectious diseases (empyema, chest wall tuberculosis, etc.), postoperative chest incision infections, and scar ulceration after postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy for breast cancer tumors; (5) Chest wall defects: sternal cleft and structural defects of the thorax caused by trauma or secondary diseases and formed after surgery, such as after tumor resection.
